I'm pretty sure you have to pull the axle out part way in order to get the caliper and bracket out. You could slip a board under the rear tire to keep it from falling.

Yes I was able to do this by knocking axle through far enough to clear the caliper bracket unbolted the stopper bolt and larger caliper bolt. Word of warning though this puts the brake lines post on the swinging arm and may cause breakage as reported elswhere. My was in fact broken and will strapped down with strong zip tie.
