Steering Head Bearing Replacement-What plastic has to be removed?

I know, old post, but the entire job can be done with normal tools. Punches long enough to reach to the far side in the gooseneck and chisels to get the old stem bearing off. Also once you remove the old races (bearings) that is your perfect size installation tool. Use a pipe of the correct diameter to pound the stem bearing on with the old race in between. Just never hit on a bearing itself just on the race closest to the stem.

As far a preload goes tighten to 20ft. lbs. rotate triple tree left and right several times to seat the bearings then loosen nut and re-tighten to about 30in. lbs. Yes, about finger tight. Tapered bearings need a lot less preload than balls.
