admittedly I was a little lazy and didn't do the valve at at 16k...after all it's a honda and everyone says no need to....all intakes w/in spec, one exhaust out of spec and 5 exhausts at the very edge...the .009 feeler gauge will fit, but is very tight...

#1.........................................#2
exhaust......intake............intake.......exhaust
.008*.........005 ...............005..........009**
.009...........005................006..........009**

#3.........................................#4
.009**.......006................005..........009
.009**.......005................005..........009**

*out of spec
**very tight

anyone doing a tech stoc near MI in the near future, so I can learn how to adjust the valves myself?????:) please???;):

I'm also wondering...the ones that are at the edge of spec...would it be worthwhile to change those since I'm in there anyway?

Aviation mechs take pride in making fun of pilots when signing off discrepencies. One of my favorites was: Pilot's complaint - "Pitch change link play almost out of limits"

Mech sign off - "almost adjusted pitch change link" :D

It is my understanding that any wear will result in tighter valve clearances. So that .009 clearance should become a .008 or .007 clearance with mileage and wear. The actual wear area is between the valve face and head, not the cam and lifter. IMHO if it is a tight fit on the high end of the scale I would leave it alone. A tight fit on the smaller end of the scale would bother me more.

I'd do the #1-#3 exhaust cam since that one valve is out of spec. Long as yur in there anyway the other three exhausts are easy (down two on the tight one, down one on the other three.)

I wouldn't touch the other side but might check in 8000 miles stead'a 16K more.

My 2 cents worth.

Just went thru all this on both STick and ReSTored, now gotta do lipSTick.

Hey, I'm one of those 'almost adjusted' types.

The feeler should fit in the gap, but without opening the valve. It should be pretty sticky to get it in/out of the gap. If the feeler breezes in without any resistance, then it's not a good measurement.

When adjusting valves a few weeks a go I had 3 exhaust valves at 0.008. I went ahead and moved ALL exhaust valves back to spec.

????

This reads to me "3 exhaust valves out of spec". I thought spec is .009" to .011" for exhaust valves. Were the other 5 within the Honda specified tolerance?

You read it right, Dave. 5 were in spec on the tight side, and I still went ahead and brought all of them to to center and/or a little above center. See, I had valves at 0.008 on both sides, so I had cams out on both sides anyway. Kinda like "naaaah I still got a mm left on the front tire, but the rear is toast, so lets go ahead and replace the front too instead of doing it in 500 miles". Makes sense? Shims? Got plenty. They're what.......a buck a piece......
