One of our local BMW club members was involved in an accident this past Wed. evening. His name was Jerry Rector, and he was out on his Big Ruckus with another friend just riding. They had been out riding all day, and as they were coming down NC 18 that evening, right after the BRP/Iron Station turnoff, something happened and he went down on the other side of the yellows. Another vehicle came around the curve and it was too late.
No one can figure out what really happened. Jerry was a very good and safe rider. He was also a great guy, and is sorely missed by all.
His funeral had a great turnout, and today he was given his final ride.
The reason I'm posting this is because awhile back there was a post about the trike/trailer hearse. Well, they decided for Jerry's funeral that they would get these guys to come up from SC (very nice husband/wife team, and a very nice rig www.blackstallionmotorcyclehearse.com).
Let me tell you, for the first time in a long time I saw everyone stopped on the road, and people standing at attention on the sides of the road. All stopped riders on the other side had the hand down wave out. People were coming out of places of business as we rode by, and ex-military were standing with salutes (Jerry was a veteran). It was police motorcycle escorted, all pallbearers were on bikes, and there was a nice line of bikes in between. It's been a long time since I've seen this kind of respect. Below are some pics.
All-in-all, it was a very impressive funeral, and that hearse commands attention. Thoughts and prayers are out to the ones he left behind, and to the best of my knowledge they are handling it as well as can be expected.
Be careful out there.
