st1100 timing belt cross reference

Partzilla has it, but wow! $175 for it:

While it is a lot of money, I would gladly pay as much for it as I wouldn’t risk using an eBay belt and I would suspect it would be a one time belt change (as we get older, that is, unless you plan another 90K miles in a rather short time)- I did mine on both STs back in 2017- I likely will never put enough miles on the bikes I have in my lifetime to need belt replacements again. Probably better to just ride and don’t worry about them.

Im thinking about replacing the belt on my 93 ST1100, has anyone used an aftermarket belt, and what about the aramid vs fiberglass difference between the Honda OEM vs lets say a Gates 5048, or one of the others, as i can see the only belt with a aramid core is the Gates T325.

I spent a couple hours last night trying to locate any belt besides oem I came across a gates 5048 that was from overseas if your in the U.S. if im remembering the site correctly someone has a used one listed on ebay that I wouldn't trust. I found a website that says they had the gates T325 in stock but after googling found no results on if it was legit but the listing had 8 reviews so I got a card thru a pay later website and purchased it so I wouldn't have to risk my card info. Its supposed to be delivered by the 25th I will let you guys know if I get the right part or not but unless they start making belts again or someone finds old stock of aftermarket ones it looks like oem is the only way to get one

Same problem as with the rest, its not aramid, its a fiberglass core.

My question is still, if its solid enough, since its a car timing belt, and not meant for motorcycles.

Does that mean that the original Honda timing belt is aramid which is to be recommended as the best?

Gates 5048 is sold in several places but in fiberglass. On the other hand Gates T325 is delivered in aramid but the ones I have checked cannot deliver.

I'm still waiting on a t325 I ordered on Amazon in October (posted earlier).

I see that several options have "325" in their number. Would that be the sizing or would it indicate aramid construction?

In my «time belt» searches, all hits specified aramid or fiberglass under the product description, see image.

Yes the OEM honda belt is aramid core, and the T325 is also, the rest is fiberglass, for fun and games i looked up the timing belt interval on the engines the Gates 5048 fits, and Its to check or replace every 4 years or at 36.000 miles, our Honda's has 90000 miles or 10 years intervals, and a lot of Honda ST1100 are still running the OEM belt after 20+ years of service.

Edit: The Gates T325 belt is also specific for motorcycles, it is not a car timing belt.

I have used the Gates T325 and no problems. Gates are extremely popular in the car trade, and would be the 'goto' brand for independent repairs. I am sure a diesel powered engine in e.g. a VW would put more pressure on a belt than our ST1100s. They are regularly fitted in Ireland on most all vehicles. Ive' never heard of one failing due to the belt only quality - it's going to be the water pump or idler / tensioner bearing causing the initial problem.

I have no doubt that a car timing belt can be used, but i would not expect it to last as long as the real belt, and i would be afraid it would stretch, the Gates 5048 is from a 1.6 diesel engine, but a very old one that produces about half the horsepower of our bikes, and less torque.

The T325 is not a car timing belt, it was developed for motorcycles.

Indeed

I should have been clearer - I was referring to the previous posters concern about using the Gates T325 as a brand instead of OEM.
