I’ve been wanting to add some provinces to my list and see the scenery along the way.
Day one. Sept 8.
This time I left on day one, later than planned as seeing my wife for an hour coming from her trip would be great. It happened to set up for good timing to stay with a friend in Syracuse.
346 miles.
Day two.
It was good to be riding. There was some sense of it being a commuter ride given all of the traffic, but as I got past Quebec City I knew the ride had begun.
Baie-St-Paul QC
488 miles

Day three.
Two lane roads, St. Lawrence seaway, cute towns and countryside out to Baie-Comeau. And I just love ferry rides.

Then the turn up 389.

Manic-cinq
331 miles.
Day four.
This one has history, cautionary tales and inspiration behind it.
This is the post that had me wondering about my choice of riding to Labrador.
This and the fact that I was soundly defeated when in 2010 I got about 20 miles into the gravel when the bike and I just got beat up, extra tall Clearview windshield bouncing so much I thought it would crack the fairing.
However, I always romanticized Happy Valley- Goose Bay reading Iron Butt reports.
I must go.
This time on a well prepared ST1300.
The windshield set up is better.
I think someone more comfortable with riding on dirt than me could do the gravel oem but I chose to prep the bike to compensate for my lack of skill, lower my fear and ride more comfortably.
As it so happened by chance, the AK-20 cartridges and Penske shock set up for “maximum comfort at the cost of handling” worked great on the rough sections of road.
And to put the odds in my favor, I installed a new set of Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires.
I ran 26psi front and 30 rear. 30-45 mph felt confident.
The tires seemed a bit much, using them for 100 miles on gravel 4800 on road but whatever it takes.
It was raining on and off. 43 degrees.
There were freshly graded areas where the bike got squirrelly on a fine muck and areas where the graders churned up gravel.
It was nice to see pavement even though there were some frost heaves.

I got to Labrador city. No hotel rooms but got directed to a nice b&b.

Hey kiltman! I am sure that finishing the ride put your ego back together quick. It is not paved all the way. There are two sections still grave. One is 100 kms the other is 70.
It rained today and I unfortunately dumped the bike. My ego is shattered, my bike filthy…. More later
