Wheel bearings...to remove or not remove prior to balancing?

Since you're taking them just the wheels, have you looked for in independent repair shop?

I think the Honda shop rate is $190 an hour around here. Last time I had a dealer R & R a tire, on the wheel, it was 1/2 hour shop rate. The independent shop guy does it for $45.
 
I bought a static wheel balance stand locally for about US$65...the maths isn't terribly hard to figure out a payback on that vs paying $100 per wheel.
 
There is no reason to remove wheel bearing for a tire change or balancing. Replacing wheel bearings do not change the tire balancing. On the ST1100 one side of the bearing has to be installed first.
 
I had to get a front tire changed on my ST1300 3-4 yrs ago while on a road trip. I had it all pre-arranged before I left home. It was recommended by Pete’s Superbike who supplied and delivered the tire to the shop that installed it. I went to the installation shop in Montreal that specializes in installing M/C tires. They took my front wheel off, installed the new tire, balanced it and reinstalled on the bike. $30 and they were happy to do it.

Im usually not very impressed by shops that work on any of my stuff, but these folks (husband and wife team) were phenomenal.
 
I think the going rate is a half hour shop time to R & R and balance a tire on a wheel brought in by owner.

If they don't want to do it because you didn't buy the tire there, I guess they have plenty of work to do.
