I'd arm myself with the workshop manual...

I have I see what I did wrong, on left they want the lines, on the right they want the dots. My mistake, Ive always worked on bikes where its only lines and assumed here they wanted either both sides on lines or both sides on dots thanks!

May not help much but......when I refurbished my 1100 one of the first things I did was to replace the timing belt.....after reading about its importance and my buying a bike garage stored for 20+ years.
I could not observe the timing marks at a glance without using my flashlight. So...I highlighted them all with a chrome-silver marker. Worked great. I would have used gloss black or red but both those were dried up. I was pleased the silver showed up so well on the silver-grey parts.

Same on those carb boot clamps and sync adjuster screws...

Very good point, give it a bit of contrast will see if I can find a marker like that
