Wise Sayings...or Not

This one is a bit longer. You could look at it as a quote within a quote. The larger context is an email newsletter from a Dr. Chris Harper. I'm growing to like his writing, his wisdom and the stories he tells of everyday life. But here's the quote from his newsletter.

Something Beautiful This Week

I walked down the stairs this week only to catch my son, sitting on the bottom step with a Star Wars book open in front of him. He was locked in, face set like flint, staring a hole into the floor 18 inches in front of him. His left hand was nearly trembling as he appeared to be grasping air. "What are you doing?" I asked, already knowing the answer…

"Trying to use the Force," he said…

"Is it working?" I asked.

"Once…" he confidently replied.

I love this kid. And I hope he never loses that. Not the belief that he can move objects with his mind. We probably need to clear that up [eventually].

But the imagination.

(And the quote within the quote that caught my eye that I wanted to share:")

Somewhere along the way, adults become very good at seeing only what is. Kids can still see what could be. C.S. Lewis wrote, "Reason is the natural organ of truth; but imagination is the organ of meaning."

Imagination isn’t the opposite of truth. At its best, imagination helps us see the beauty, possibility, and meaning of what is true. George MacDonald went even further: "To inquire into what God has made is the main function of the imagination."
