At the WVSTOC rally , I saw a couple examples of the bars that bolt a flange to the frame and there is a "U" bar that extends out past the saddlebags ( of a ST1300 ) They look like they would protect the exhaust mufflers as well as the saddlebags in a tip-over side crash. Anyway, I am looking for who makes the version that has the strongest, fatest section through the "U" shaped bar ? Paint color doesn't matter - I will paint it to match the '07 Silver anyway.

Take a look at St1300p.com - they have ones that use tubular steel coupled with a flat cross-bar which incorporate use of the passenger footpeg mount for additional strength.

Motorcyclelarry.com makes ones that are virtually identical, however sans use of the passenger footpeg mount.

bygdawg (member on here) also makes a version using solid steel

I run the st1300p version on my bike, and run the MCL version on my wife's bike.

I have bydawg's version and have tested both sides. LOL!! They kept the bike off the gravel, saving any scratching of the bags and did not bend, doing their job perfectly.

I have found Motorcycle Larry's version - for $195 ! - wow ! bygdawg site seems to be gone , actual site will not come in using 3 search engines. MCL site was saying bygdawg bars are only 9/16" rod , is that true ?

How big do they need to be to protect a 900 lb Goldwing? These installed were less than $40.

Honda does. They are tip over bars for the 2000-2010 GL1800 Goldwing. You are free to pay more if you like, I'll sell you some for $200 or you can find them on fleaBay for $25 to $50 a set.

Hmmm, I may have some GL1800 crash bars for sale in the near future. Unfortunately they don't work on the ST1100

I had no idea the gl1800 bars fit.
The bolt holes don't exactly line up but you can place the open end of the "U" in a vise and get the dimension correct then hold it there by tightening a band-type hose clamp around it. Then you can bolt them in place.

you will also need 4 bolts m10X1.25 X 50-60

Because they are 1.25, they are a bit harder to find , but I found them at ace .

You need to ream out the holes in the gold wing bars a bit, and get at least 2 band clamps
(~ 2.5-3.5)inches to hold the holes tightly

I used 10 mm bolts 40 mm long if I recall correctly. The originals are 23 mm threaded and are recessed 7 mm. Since the GL1800 bar base is 11 mm thick and use a regular head bolt it has to be 23 + 7 + 11 = 41 mm long. Longer ones would fit but might protrude slightly out of the subframe on the inboard side.

Will any bars from an 1800 work or do they need to be a particular year?

Apparently 40 works fine .

I measured mine at 26 + 12 + 8 .

The stock setup indents a bit more into the plastic into the plastic then just the head and there is some gap where the GL bars don't sit perfectly flat .

I just bought a set of the GL1800 crash bars for my ST, that should be here Saturday. I found them on the GL1800riders forum. It seems that a lot of these are available due to folks triking their Wings.

I used Bydawgs and can attest they work great. Why don't you send him a PM and he should respond!
