I've had someone try to break into my left pocket and they did a great job of destroying the lock and lid. I'm going to replace them but I was wondering if there is a way to get one that matches my existing key (for ignition and side cases). I suspect that there is only so many different key types and that if I got the same code it would work.

Is this possible or is it unrealistic to think I could read a number or something from my key and order that key'ed lock?

It is possible if you have another lock to re-key it. There are some specialists that can swap the plates around to match your existing key. Had it done myself on the two panniers. one lock came out reasonably OK, the other lock could be opened with any screwdriver.
Go to a good locksmith, they should be able to help you. Good luck !

Depending on what a replacement lock costs on ebay, and what your local locksmith wants to do the rekeying, you might consider taking a cheap replacement apart and doing the keying yourself. This is not rocket science, and if you take some care, you could probably do it yourself. All depends on how cheap you can source a replacement (used) lock.

If it's not easy and cheap for a locksmith to rekey the lock I'd be tempted to settle for turning the odd key (and a duplicate or two) into a short key with a knob. You could leave it in the lock when appropriate and remove it as needed.
