Edit:
(I read st1100 initially, oops my bad).

The only time I've seen an issue with a cold ST1300 is with a vacuum leak...

When it does this does holding the tach at or above 4000 rpm trigger an FI light? If so it will store a diagnostic code to check.

will try the 4000 rpm when i start her from work tonight
not seen any lights come on
i am suspecting as Mark suggests this bike did 200 miles in 12 months spent most of it's last year in a garage with cloth over it.
possibly a cracked perished breather pipe.
i am waiting to move house once moved end of this week i plan to remove all tupper ware and see if i can see whats going on underneath
plan to put thermostat in her and new fan switch so may as well check everything while im in there.
and i think i oil and filter her while apart...

Could just be some bad gas... I'd try some sea foam or whatever you chaps have handy over there that's similar.

Have you been using the bike regularly or has it been sitting in hibernation over the winter. My bike stubbles a bit for the first few starts if I leave it down for a month or 2.
After that, it runs fine.
