Re: ST1100-Touch-Up Paint

2605 no longer exists. What is anybody using on their 91? I need to paint the lid of my new top box.

G, take one of your sparkling silver pieces to a good, automotive paint supplier. Have them scan it optically to determine how to mix your paint. I think they can even determine the correct coarseness of the aluminum flakes that give your piece its sparkle. Their paint will be cheaper, too (but I did not say it will be cheap).

If that fails, ask the SSM expert, John Osterhuis (STOC 1058).

(The previous method is not recommended for candy colors such as those used in years 1992-93 and 2000-2002, for US models. But by the way, the base coat for years 1992-93 is also a version of silver metallic.)

I agree with electra-Joe Urban that Colorite is too expensive if your color is gloss black.

Re: ST1100-Touch-Up Paint

And two years later...

Thanks for the help. I will try to do that. My bike is easily a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 in the look department but I would love to touch up those bits where there are marks and make it even better.

Re: ST1100-Touch-Up Paint

I've ordered Colorrite cans three different times, once for Kawasaki's purple pearl 2-stage. All 3 times the color was just a bit off, but probably not so much you'd notice if you didn't know the part had been repainted. With one part I even sent a sample off the bike in, but the paint still came back a tad dark.
The problem with using the cans, of course, is the clear coat. On the Kawaski I had a friend who has professional equipment clear the entire touched up fairning, which turned out great- as good as stock. Once I tried Colorrite's clear spray can which didn't look as shiny as stock, and the finish was disappointing. The surface was also much less durable, and I ended up scraping the part and buying a used piece.
The other time I cleared a fender painted with the Colorrite 1-stage paint with a $5 can of Duplicolor clear Lacquer. It took a couple tries and I spent some time wet sanding and polishing it, but it turned out damn good, looked like stock excpt for the silver color being just a bit darker - very hard to tell. I don't know how durable it ended up being as I sold that bike a couple weeks later.
One thing I know for sure; you can touch up a problem area on a piece or spray the whole piece with the Colorrite and pull it off, but in all cases you need to clear the entire piece for it to look right. Otherwise, you will just end up with an obviously touched up part.

Pure-Red, ST1100 Touch-Up Paint

I ordered small bottles of R158P red (and white base coat) from Color-rite, but I did not buy their thinner or reducer. Now their paint is drying up in the bottles.

Q1. Does anyone know another brand of urethane reducer that might thin out Color-rite urethane paint? (Dupont and Sikkens are said to not work.)

I need something for touch up.

-------------------------------------------------

Q2. Does anyone know of a mixing formula for the red coat of pure red pearl? (That's color number R-158P used on 1995-1997 ST1100s.)

Q3. How about R158 used on VFR750s, 1994-1998, which is simply pure red, without pearl?

Q4. How about a web site that has formulas?

Please include paint brand, if available, with the formula.
(By the way, the white base seems to be ordinary white; nothing special.)

---------------------------------------------------

Q5. Can these red panels be "scanned" to come up with a formula for a close match to the red?

Re: ST1100-Touch-Up Paint

After epoxying the left saddle bag and mirror housing for my '96 together (Steep driveway and the guy in front stopped suddenly), I thought what the heck and grabbed can of red Rust-Oleum plastic paint: Sunrise Red 211367. :D
The color matched almost perfectly. You will never match perfectly because the Honda finish has gold flecks embedded.:
When a buddy saw it, he remarked, "How much did the new saddle bag set you back?"
"'Bout $10 for epoxy and paint." I replied parsimoniously. ;)
