Who has the highest mileage timing belt. Honda recommends replacing at 90,000 miles.

I changed out Stick's at about 82 because I was looking at a long trip. She now has 166,000 so is coming up on her second change. When I changed the belt, the old belt still looked new. Of course, that was in 96 so it was only 6 years old. I went ahead and put the new belt in since I already had her apart.

ReSTored has 88,000 and she's on the bubble for my 10 week trip starting on April 5. Prolly 16,000 miles. I know folks have run past 90,000, and I'm gonna do it to ReSTored. Just wondering how far it can go.

Sounds like there will be need of a *belt SToc* in AZ after George gets back...

Well there will be 2 bikes needing the change if BT actually goes out and rides this spring... :)

DOH!
I just noted that both of you are doing *way* better than I am on '08 mileage! :D
Congrats and please make the crow spicy...

I'm doing a timing belt this weekend on my daughter's '99 Civic. Hey, it's a Honda! Dealer wants $650 and the belt only costs $50 - no brainer. The job looks easier than for the ST1100, as it's a SOHC design. Honda cage belts are good for 110,000 miles according to the owner's manual, dunno why the bikes would be different.

Higher RPM for the same mileage.

BeltSTOC would be a good reason for a group gather. Could even get Bashaw to drop in on his way back form Alaska. He says he'll be pushing 110,000 miles by then, too.

Most people change them because of age rather than miles. I have a 91 and a 97 with over 60,000 on each and have the original belts. I am planning on getting them changed next winter so both will be ready for retirement miles.:03biker:

My 1100 has almost 98,000 miles on the belt now George. I have lots of riding planned and not much time for maint. until the end of the year. So, I should be changing it at about 115,000 miles at the rate I'm going. Hope it hangs in there that long.

I had already decided to leave it, but was willing to change my mind if data dictated. Sounds like we're gonna be fine.

Thanks for all the input from here and st-riders.

Coolant hoses: 120,000 miles max, in my experience. (STick blew one at 121,000)
Timing belt: still unknown, but bad idler pulleys have damaged a couple. The idler pulley will prolly go somewhere north of 160,000.
28amp alternator: varies with load. Mine was still going strong at 150,000 when finally changed out. Some have gone only 50,000. tic-tic-tic.
Water pump: same as idler pulley with a few failing at lower miles.
Rear wheel cush dampers: ~50,000 miles.
Rear splines: indefinite if properly lubed and o-rings replaced
Wheel Bearings: varies, depending on climate and winter riding. Ron Majors used to change his every 25,000 miles. 50,000 is more reasonable in my experience.
Steering head bearings: exchange for roller bearings at first opportunity.
Swing Arm Bearings: never seen a failure.
Fuel pump: luck of the draw.
Various switches: clean and lube as needed.
Instruments: varies. STick's tach went somewhere around 166,000 miles. Mark B. lost the speedo drive on his 1100 recently, don't know the miles.

Pretty much everything else is consumable, will need some attention eventually.

Unbelievable!~:hat1:

Now I realize that loosing a t/belt whilst out and about is a real pain in the keester but the REAL question is:

Are the ST1100 engines non-interference or are the interference type engines? Much better to take the chance with going over in mileage/age with a non-interference engine than the interference ones IMHO!

Inquiring minds want to know!!

The belt at 108,900 "looked" good. No frays, cuts, or splits on it. While I was at it I replaced my water pump too, the water pump also "looked" good with no play on the shaft.
Thane did his waterpump and pullys and belts at 370,000km, first time for the waterpump. Said it still looked good. I don't think I'll bother with it for the first 250,000 miles. Hoses and belt (and idler pulley) will come before too many more miles, maybe by 100,000mi.

STill pretty darn good!

I'm gonna do this trip on ReSTored, then maybe work on STick next as she's approaching her second belt.

For all those getting comfort from the big mileages quoted, let me bring you down to earth a little: I had a timing belt break on a Pan at around 68,000. It's not a cheap job to fix when you've bent three or four valves.

Thanks for the info, Clive. That's the first I've heard of a belt breaking. Understand the bent valves. Was anything else found wrong under the timing cover (idler pulley, etc)??
