Lately my dash has gone blank. When I turn on the ignition the dash flashes up briefly then goes blank. everything else works perfectly and the bike continues to ride perfectly. I'm pretty good at auto electrics but this has got me stumped. 2006 st1300

Could be the signs of a failing battery - is that the original?

My display has blanked a coupe of times on me, normally on Monday morning after no riding over the weekend.
when I hit the starter first thing Monday morning (weather has been cold) it start "almost" normal but had a slight hickup during starting.
That's the point the display blanks and everything resets, like what happens when you disconnect the battery.
From everything I have read on hear I need a battery. I havne't picked one up yet but to prevent this I plug in the charger on Friday if I don't think I will be riding and with some of this extreem cold we have had I plug it in when I get home after work just to keep it topped off.
So far I haven't had any issues but I know it's just a matter of time so will be replacing it.
If it blanks when your starting the bike I would agree with Mellow that you need a battery.
Good luck.

Sounds like Mellow is right again when he says it sounds like a battery going bad. Replace the battery and I bet your problems will be gone.

when I bought my 03 it was doing same thing, shop thought it might be computer.....ha ha
I thought it might be a relay or something that swithched off.
turned out to be fuse.......I don't know why/how
been working for last 8 months

Good suggestion, fuses are cheaper than batteries, remember which one?

If the dash is dark (not a brief moment of going off when the starter is engaged then the dash resumes normal when the engine starts - that's likely a weak battery or dirty battery connections) all the time I would strip off the tupperware and focus on a yellow bus bar/connecter that is found kind of behind and above the right headlight. It will be yellow plastic and has just green wires going into it, a bunch into the top of it and one out of the other side. These are all the grounds for the dash instruments and lighting. If there is corrosion in the connector preventing good ground connections there will be trouble with some or all of the dash electrics. It is rare but there has been threads and posts about this connector causing similar problems. If the connector tests good then trace the single large green wire from the yellow bus to a large white 24 pin connector found on the left side of the frame over the left cylinder head. Here is another place where corrosion can prevent a good ground and cause your problem. Since there are no other problems with electrics in the front of the bike the ground should be good from there to the large frame ground but anything is possible.

If the grounds all test good I would then pull off the positive bus connector that powers all the electric devices in the instrument panel and test for clean 12v to here. Since everything is dark the problem is probably the multiple ground bus but if it is good there might be a problem getting 12v past this multiple pin connector.

Good luck and post what you find. I had a ground problem up front in my 05 and found help from others in this forum and coming across old threads dealing with ground issues in the front of the bike.

I would definitely have the battery load tested before condemning it. If the starter cranks the engine strongly and you have no problem starting the bike, that's an indication that the battery is probably ok. You certainly don't want to waste money replacing a perfectly good battery if the cause is elsewhere.

Thanks to all of you who took the trouble to reply to me, I love this club.
You have sorted the problem !!. Changed the battery but the problem remained, It was five years old anyway so it was due. As soon as I touched the yellow connector the problem disappeared so I cleaned and greased the contacts and my pride and joy is perfect again. I owe you.
