Sounds like a tire problem to me, if you didn`t have it before and now you do. But be carefull what you say no one will believe you, Storms can do no wrong. See my and other posts to Avon Storm split tread started by mpgar starting on 6-13-09.
The other "ST1300" thread mentioned had a rear tire with sidewall damage that could have been caused by many things. It was well worn out. Maybe ran flat or improper inflation. I gave up posting in there after a poster kept editing his prior posts to correct his logic errors, so the thread no longer made the same sense as it originally did.
Come on Larry, even you stated in that other thread that the Storms are fine on an ST1100, (this thread is about the Storm on an ST1100), and you said only issues occur with the ST1300 size. Your other thread was all about sidewall plies, and the front (and rear) ST1100 Storm has plenty. Never heard of any crashes due to Storms, unlike other tires.
Based on your logic, he should avoid all tires, since all have issues at some point for someone. At least it wasn't like the PR2 that exploded for no reason (without warning) on an ST1300 rider, posted about in another thread the other day. So it's stay away from Storms (they wobble or wear out)? Stay FAR away from PR2's (they explode)? What else do you use in the wet?
We get it. You don't like Storms on anything. That's fine for you, and I won't comment again on your thoughts.
Back on topic.
I too had a wobble with a new front Storm on an ST1100, as it seemed they had a bad batch that forced them to shut down production for several weeks (all ST1100 sizes disappeared and went on backorder for several weeks). The tire was promptly replaced with one from a good prior batch, and wobble completely gone. That was more than 17,000 miles ago, and still tons of tread left, with nice wear. Expect this front will easily go 25,000+ miles.
One thing that is always mentioned about the Storms is how great they handle. Instant change for the better in the way the bike feels. The down side to that is that they adjust to every little road detail. The ST1100 has a known issue with Steering Head bearings that will cause a wobble that you might not notice with less sensitive tires. If questionable, the Storms will magnify the need to replace them with tapered bearings. Search for more info.
After testing several tires, including Bridgestones and Dunlops, I will only run Avon Storms on the ST now, even though I was one that had a defective one initially.
Replacement needs to come from Avon in Washington state, not the distributors warehouse, otherwise you might get the same. Call Avon directly and they will send from the correct location. Dealer might not.
Avon is not a second rate company. For motorcycle safety, they even have a no plug policy, where they will replace your tire at no charge, if you run over a nail and get a hole in it (limited mileage). Who else does that for motorcycles?
