I actually did this last year, only now getting to taking pictures.

I wanted the 08 side covers to clean up the look of my 04 so ordered up a set. Part numbers are in another thread I posted.

I fabricated little Stainless steel brackets for the side covers lower locating pins on both sides of the bike. (Grommets work nicely)

The shock adjuster side with the hole needed the lower brackets as you can see in the pictures as well it required a way to mount it to the bottom of the 04's side panel

My solution was 2 -1" square blocks of 1/4" thick ABS plastic glued together and glued to the back of the panel with ABS plumbing glue. once that was done a hole was drilled to accept the barbed threaded inserts you can buy at most hardware stores.

They are designed for wood, but if you drill the right size hole and coat them liberally with ABS glue they fit and make a nice threaded insert in the plastic blocks.

A couple of #10 machine screws hold the panel in place.

The other side is easy, the lower brackets with the grommets are needed, but otherwise the cover just replaced the 04 battery cover.

Pictures below.
