Will a 170/60-17 tire fit ( without problems, like rubbing on the swing arm when leaned over, or even when stationary ) on a ST1100 ? I believe the 170/60-17 tire is the recommended tire for a ST1300.

Jim,

I think you might have fat fingered your question as both your tire specs are the same.
That being said:

OEM Replacement Sizing: 160/70V-17 - Honda ST1100 '91-'02 from here (NOT a recommendation).

Edit:
160/60-17 is what they had one time when I was out of town. I bought it and it fit; but, it was difficult to get the bike onto the centerstand and I didn't like the way it changed the handling.

I don't know about the 170/60... sorry.

Yes, a 170/60 will fit (it did on my '98).

+1 to Mark's comments.

It is harder to get on the center stand with a 60 sidewall, and RPM is higher at a given speed.

The biggest issue I recall is that the back end of the bike is squishy and twitchy around other vehicles--the tire flexes more laterally. I did not like it and was happy to get the correct size on later.

I've run (and am running) the 170/60 17 on both of my ABSII bikes with no issues (PR3s on one and BT030 GTs on the other). I don't even notice a sidestand or centerstand issue with the 170/60. On ABSII ST1100s, the front is the same as the ST1300 and the ST1300 rear works just fine. It opens up a whole 'nother set of tire options. ;-)

170/60 is under 25 inches in diameter (24.6) 160/70 is 25.7 depending on the brand but pretty close width is only millimeters different, the 60 being wider .. there is plenty of clearence

Mark:

No, I said exactly what I wanted to say .........

To state it in another way, " Can the tire recommended for the ST1300 fit on a ST1100 ?? "

From what BakerBoy & Uncle Phil said, apparently it will, without any interference problem.

I don't think the 170/60 being about 4.3% smaller in diameter is a big problem.

Thanks guys !!

I considered the 170/60-17 but got a good deal on a BT023 in the 160/70-17 so went with that, might try the ST1300 size the next time in PR4GT.

I have run a 160/60 and a 170/60. Both from un-fixable flats on the road. One is gone the 160/60 is on my spare wheel as a backup. The bike rides low with it. It looks to have a couple thousand left on it. I might burn it off before installing the next new tire. It will all be local.

Suggestions for a suitable 160/70 gladly accepted.

You can still get Metzeler Z6 Roadtecs in the proper sizes. I bought a set last fall from a Canadian distributor. Great tires, IMO.

Jim,

Please let us know what you think after running them!

Mark

I'm going to trust Uncle Phil's experience, and give it a shot on my next tire change, but that will be in another 10K miles. Had to replace my rear tire prematurely last year after getting a flat at the end of my IBA Great Lakes 1K .

I'm hoping a little wider tire will result in better longetivity ( less wear ). And actually, I would like the bike to lean a little more when on the side stand too, but that's a minor concern.

Ron : I have been running the Avon Ultra2 Storm in the 160/70 size. Been happy with it. I run a Bridgestone Exedra Max 120/70 on the front. The Bridgestone 023 ( front ) that came on the bike was cupping badly. Essentially no cupping with the Exedra.

If I try a 170/60 on the rear next time , I think I may try a Shinko Verge 011. I have read some good reports on the Shinko tires - cheap & perform well. I have a Shinko Tourmaster 230 on the rear of my old Moto Guzzi Convert ( that has a custom 16" rear wheel ) and have been happy with it.

The 170/60 works just fine on the ST1100. I'm running a Shinko Verge on the front of Redbird and really don't like it. It was horribly nervous the first 300 miles and now it still does not handle well. I was trying to 'match' wear on the BT020 bias I had on the back. I'll be glad when it's 'gone' but I'm too tight to just take it off and toss it! ;-)

Good to know !! I really like the Exedra that I have on the front. I'm sticking with it. Have a new one ready to install after I put a few more miles on the old front, but before I do two IBA rides later this year.

BTW, I really got cheesed-off after that flat last year that forced me to replace that rear tire that still had plenty of miles left on it, since I'm retired and on a fixed income ( and cheap, besides ).

I once tried a Shinko 170/60 on the rear of my ST1100 and the tire was TOO WIDE to fit between the swing arm. Can't remember which tire it was, however all 170 series tires are not alll the same width. The actual width was as wide as a few 180 series tires. Really wanted it to fit, because of the price.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Shinko 170/60 . Looks like I'll stick with the Avon OEM size.

I ran a couple MEZ 6 and were disappointed with the mileage (about 6K miles). Great in all other aspects. My favorite all time tire was the MEZ4.

Today I installed a set of Avon 3D Storms. The rear against my better judgment. I have had 5 for 6 on punctures, 2 un-pluggable. I'm not sure the difference between a Storm and a 3D Storm.
