Triumph introduced two new 400-class entry-level motorcycles in 2024 and added two more to the lineup earlier this year, allowing customers to shop between a standard-style bike, a scrambler, a flat-track-inspired bike, and a sporty option. For 2027, Triumph has once again expanded its 400s lineup with the introduction of the Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black, bringing recognizable Bonneville styling to the platform.

Both models draw on the design of classic Bonnevilles, with a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, round LED headlight, long fenders, spoked wheels, twin rear shocks, and a peashooter-style exhaust. Other details include rubber tank knee pads, a traditional Triumph tank badge, and hand-painted coach lining on heritage-inspired paint schemes.

The Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black bring Bonneville styling to Triumph’s entry-level 400 platform.

The standard T40 is offered in New England White and Jet Black or Meriden Blue and Tangerine Orange. The T40 Black is darker, with Matte Pewter Gray and Matte Phantom Black bodywork, blacked-out engine cases and exhaust components, and gloss-black aluminum wheel rims with contrasting steel spokes.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine with four valves, an 89mm bore, a 64mm stroke, and a 12:1 compression ratio. This is the same Single first seen on Triumph’s Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, which received a special tune for the Tracker 400 and Thruxton 400. The engine is yet again revised for its use in the T40, featuring a revised cylinder head and dedicated tune that prioritizes low- and midrange torque.

The Black version gets a brown seat.

Claimed output is 32 hp at 7,000 rpm and 26.6 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The engine uses Bosch electronic fuel injection and electronic throttle control, paired with a 6-speed transmission and an X-ring chain final drive. A wet, multiplate slip/assist clutch is also standard.

The T40 uses a tubular-steel hybrid spine/perimeter frame and a steel swingarm. Suspension consists of a 43mm telescopic fork with 5.1 inches of travel and twin rear shocks with preload adjustment and 5.1 inches of travel.

The round TFT display features a Heritage Mode, which mimics an analog speedometer and odometer.

Spoked aluminum wheels measure 18 inches at the front and 17 inches at the rear. Braking components include a 310mm front disc with a 2-piston caliper and a 255mm rear disc with a 1-piston caliper. Lean-sensitive Optimized Cornering ABS is standard.

The T40 has a 31.1-inch seat height, a 55.8-inch wheelbase, and a claimed wet weight of 421 lb. An optional low seat reduces seat height to 30.3 inches. Fuel capacity is 3.8 gallons.

The fuel tank is adorned with a Triumph badge and coachlining.

A circular, 4-inch full-color TFT display integrates smartphone connectivity, full-map navigation, and phone and music controls. Riders can choose from five riding modes: Road, Rain, Eco, and two customizable modes. Cruise control, cornering traction control, full LED lighting, self-canceling turn signals, an emergency deceleration warning, and a USB-C charging port are also included. A Heritage Mode changes the TFT layout to an analog-style display.

Triumph will offer accessories including alternative seats and classic panniers. The manufacturer specifies service intervals of 10,000 miles (16,000 km).
