A thrust washer by any other name?

My 1995 Honda St1100 ABS/TCS has lost its original rear wheel thrust washer. Probably wore through and fell out during wheel servicing. The part number is 42616-MT3-000. ST1100s from 1996 have part number 42616-MAJ-G20. Neither part has dimensions provided. The only one I can get for a long trip this week is 42616-MAJ-G20 which has been installed. It is making a slight "growling" noise when I spin the wheel but fine when riding.

Can anybody elucidate based on prior experience?

Regards
Garry

IIRC '90 ~ `95 had a steel washer, '96 onward a nylon one...
The noise could have various sources, I'd start with checking the hub dampers and wheel bearings though...

Both thrust washers are listed as in stock at Fowlers - one of the biggest suppliers here in the Uk.

Not much use to you in Oz, but maybe an indication of availability.

For future reference I suggest that those that have spares could measure the :
1. Inner diameter
2. Outer diameter
3. Thickness

That way we could compare dimensions

that spacer and all the stuff between them move together. With rear wheel bearings one side has to be installed first, don't remember which side.

This one (42616-MAJ-G20) is the same one used for my Valkyries.
Ronayers.com is showing these (42616-MT3-000) as available.

I have only seen plastic and brass thrust washer. I think they are interchangeable.

Steel and nylon, identical/interchangable; have not heard of a brass version. As to the growling, if the new bearings were installed incorrectly (side-loaded) that’s one possible cause; there are others. FWIW

This thread is so timely for me. Quick question about this thrust washer please gentlemen. Could somebody please confirm that this thrust washer gets a good licking of Moly Paste, or, is it meant to be Moly Grease, both sides of it during install? I just recall it being black and slimy when I took it off! Thanks
:)

When I rode Valkyries with the same thrust washer moly paste was always used there and everywhere in the spline joint area. Grease flings out much easier. paste sticks.

This area of the drive chain is only moly paste. And I've used both the metal and plastic washers, both exactly the same dimensions.

Thank you very kindly for your replies gentlemen, especially Flexit for that extra pdf. :thumb:Thanks! It has immediately joined my 'special notes' to self folder. I lost the last lot with my pc crashing!:(. Wish it was a few degrees warmer, I'd be going a lot faster with this rebuild. Roll on summer!

@Taffy You can download the ST1100 workshop manual - complete version here https://www.facebook.com/groups/532793110173047/permalink/756244771161212

Understand about the weather, it's been miserable for working on bikes. I've done some electricalling to my solo... but my very high mileage outfit is begging attention to what I suspect is a terminal gearbox/final drive problem. I just can't get the enthusiasm to crawl on my garage floor at the moment

Wowee, so helpful and again, thanks very much. Now where did I put my facebook login details?..........oh yeah, on my crashed pc!
:eek::eek::oops::oops::oops::rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:, I shall search every inch of my abode for my copious scrawled notes, in the hope I can find anything, as it's all my logins, passwords etc I'll need to find. If in the meantime, some kind soul may have a copy 'laying around' on their pc,:) I am very happy to use, and find very convenient to use, the free 'wetransfer' file hosting service at https://wetransfer.com/ (mods permitting, of course). I don't need to register anything, neither do you, less faff all round, click click done!:). As for my garage floor, can you believe I put a carpet down last winter. Sounds crazy I know, but a few milimetres of carpet, especially in the middle of winter makes all the difference. A thick piece of cardboard extra and on with my bike jacket and I might even just take a kip!:)

@Taffy Quite happy to use the WeTransfer system, but it requires an email address for me to send it to...

That would be brilliant, cheers. It's been a while since I last used WeTransfer. Last time was when it was free, for uploads up to 2GB, with auto expiry in 7 days.:) It was good, and so convenient. If the file you have got is greater than 2GB, then so be it, and I will happily PM you with a private email, otherwise, could you just check again on the free, unregistered users. For example, here is a link to just over 1GB of my Pan Swing Arm at https://we.tl/t-yJhd2yhq1E. If you area registered user it automatically asks for the other email, but open up their website, without signing in, and it's like I said above(fingers crossed!):D:D:D:D:D

I'm pretty sure it's click and download, same as was before, if not, please get back and I'll PM my details. Thanks.
