I bought my 2006 ST about 3 months ago. It has 40K miles and generally seems to run well. The ambien air temperature has never been displayed on the dash board although all other functions on the dash seem to work. Would the problem most likely be the sensor then? And if so, does that sensor also give info to the ECU/fuel injection system? Thanks for any advise.

Check the wiring connections under the fairing. The sensor is in the fairing right by the radiator. It might simply be unplugged. They are also known to break the wires when taking off the fairing if you forgot to unplug it.

I believe it's just ambient air and not used for any fuel injection controls as it can read higher than actual temps when not moving due to rad heat etc.

Has the prior owner removed the inner cowlings? If so, the open air sensor connection may be missing entirely?
You also may want to check the Air Temperature sensor connection on the top of the air box cover, perhaps someone forgot to plug it back in last time they were in there.

Here is a picture of a somewhat disassembled ST 1300, showing the location on the wiring harness of the connector for the Outside Air Temperature (OAT) sensor.

The sensor itself is a small round black thing, a little bigger than the end of an eraser on a pencil, that is embedded in the right hand panel beside the radiator.

You can check to see if the sensor is connected by removing a few of the push-pins that hold that inner right-hand side panel in place - major disassembly is not needed.

My guess is that your sensor is just not plugged in. It's an easy thing to forget when re-assembling the plastic panels.

My 03 has been stripped several times by various shops and now I found the Temp Sensor just dangling by the horn (in working condition).

Reading further above, it sounds like the sensor should be attached to the right middle cowl? Where and how does it fit?

On the other hand, I haven't observed any adverse effect over the years with it just hanging where it is, so maybe just zip tying it to the horn bracket might also work?

Talk about a jury rigged fix :rofl1:
Looks like someone broke the wires trying to remove the inner right cowl, and removed the base from the cowl, twisted the wires, shoved it in the connector and left it hanging etc.
That would be like hot wiring a car with a screw driver, yeah the car would start and run, but why would anyone who took pride in their work do that to someone’s bike?
