All the gear all the time

I'm a live-and-let-live libertarian when it comes to this particular topic as well.
And while I try not to judge, usually I still do.
Likely due to my first serious incident when I was a teenager on my the first bike I owned and paid for.
Blazing hot August day, no shirt, no jacket, no gloves.
When I was knocked off the bike by a middle-aged lady (I never saw him!), I tumbled, rolled and slid for about 50 feet and Mom debrided the road rash twice a day with a wet washcloth and Phisohex for 6 weeks.
I missed the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon album kickoff tour that my girlfriend had bought tickets for, as a surprise.
1974. Skin grafts were not necessary, but the daily double dose of pain and blood was.
I've never ridden naked since then, and never will again.
And I suppose I'll be saying the same thing if I ever survive a crash with injuries that may have been prevented by an air vest...
It was brought home too, by a stunningly beautiful teenaged blonde girl who was underdressed and fell off the back of her boyfriend's bike when he decided to impress her with a wheelie.
Followed her story for months as she underwent hospitalization, skin grafts and painful rehab. Her body was so damaged and torn up, she lost a breast as a result.
Needless to say, her photo diary was horrific.
No doubt most of us have seen similar stories, or have friends who experienced similar.
Personal choice comes with personal responsibility, and that's the part many people don't consider.

Poor decisions or choices of others is not the only cause of higher health care costs. My HMO plan shot up dramatically in costs going from 2025 to 2026. I can still "afford" it but increasing ramen in my diet to pay for it may be working at crossed purposes.
Yet the PROFITS of Health Insurance companies is in the BILLIONS of dollars every year

  • The p/c insurance industry made a record $88 billion in profits in 2023, even as companies jacked up rates for policyholders.
  • The $88 billion profit was more than double the profits of the previous year and marked the industry’s most profitable year in history.
  • In Q1 2024, profitability continued to surge, reaching $39 billion in one quarter, putting the industry on pace to shatter 2023’s record profits.
