Best Radar Dector Mount

Erik

Well I should be getting my ST either this week or early next. The first thing I MUST do is get my V1 installed. So what is the best, slickest, trickist mount for the ST??? FYI I will be wiring in my autocom so I can hear it go off. And a hard wire adaptor for the V1

I've got my V1 in the left storage bin with a remote display and audio module velcroed to the clutch and brake reservoirs.

Do you guys get good protection from the rear with it mounted on the dash or in the pocket? I was thinking I would need to hang it out on a RAM mount off the brake reservoir area to get good detection from the rear...

Radar penetrates just about everything except metal to a certain degree. I have noticed a very slight decrease in rear sensitivity since moving the unit, but not enough that it bothers me. It would be interesting to do a side by side comparo of the different mounting locations. The up-side is that I no longer have to worry about the rain or theft.

I've done a similar install in the past, mount the V1 in a hard bag.. But I do like the idea of putting it in the pocket. Thanks

I have a radar detector related question.

I keep reading in poples accounts of when they got stopped they hid their radar detector away. Is it illegal to use one ?

Depends on the specific state your in. Some east coast states, it's illegal.

They are illegal in all commercial vehicles and in 3-4 states on the east coast... ;)

Radar Dectectors are illegal in Virginia and Washington DC. everywhere else in the US they're OK. I think, (but am not positive) they are illegal in Canada.

I am in Canada out west and I know they are fine in Mantioba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Not sure about the rest of Canada. I think Ontario was a hold out for awhile but believe it's OK now.

The cheapest yet effective mount is a wedge-shaped piece of wood stuck to the ST's dash with hook-n-loop. The detector is then hook-n-looped to the top of the wedge. Get the angle right so the detector is level and shape the wood to the curvature of the dash for best results. Spray with flat black paint for stealth. Most people won't even notice the detector and I lay my gloves over it when I leave the bike.

Doesn't your V1 get sorta hot in there during the summer?! :shrug1:

I have the RAM magnetic mounting plate on the brake reservoir using the standard arm (3"). Hardwired to aux fuse panel. Easy on & off.
