I did the red wire bypass and ignition relay modification on my 93, today i was out riding and the bike quit. I found my relay had fried internally, and the reason why is I discovered that I had lost connection to my red wire fuse, (bad fuse holder I guess), BUT the bike continued to run, and without power to the regulator, the generator was full fielding and it blew both headlights, fried the low beam relay, and fried my ignition bypass relay, which ultimately casued the bike to die since the ignition switch finally lost power. Doing testing with everything connected back up, if I pull my main added red wire fuse, which obviously cuts igntiion power, the bike keeps running, and is charging at 24V... My only thought is that the diode in the alternator is bad and is backfeeding voltage through the black wire to the fuse box to the igition switch to keep everything energized? with the fuse removed, I have no power to anything and no start as it should be. Cant be the way the bike is designed... are failing diodes normal on these old 28 amp alternators? I always thought they just quit or got weak.
