It took 100 years but BMW recently built its 1 millionth boxer twin. The millionth bike off the assembly line was a R1250GS. The iconic twin cylinder engine first appeared in the model R32 in 1923.

Yep. Those are the engines that I think of when someone says BMW motorcycle engines. Hope they never stop making their signature engine.

Cool engine, happy with mine. A better boxer is the flat six in the Goldwing, so smooth...
Motorcycle riding enhances one's appreciation of internal combustion. No inclination to stop at the office of the psychiatrist! And, speaking for myself, no urge to ride an electric motor!

As you know BMW did try and leave the air cooled flat twin behind when inline K bikes came along in 1983 but the faithful wouldn’t go along. Of all the bikes I’ve had the 1981 R100 I rode from 2006 to 2012 provoked the most conversations with strangers. More than a few middle agers walked up to me to share a fond memory or memories they had riding on an older family member‘s Beemer when they were young. The engine is instantly recognizable.
