Break in Growl?

Hi All

As I work my way past the 150 kilometer mark on my new 2005, I am curious about some of the vibes I am feeling.

1st) Taking off gently from a stop the engine ?Thunders? a bit. I am in the 1500-2000 rmp range as the clutch is released. When higher rpms used its better but I don?t like it.

2nd) As I am breaking in the bike I have complied with the manuals recommendation of ?Avoid hard acceleration for the first 500k? and keeping RPMs below 3000 as best I can. A couple of times recently I have ?Cracked? it and as the engine passes 3500 I feel a LOT of vibration and there is an unpleasant growl.

I will continue to gently break it in with the occasional ?Heat cycle? and hope for the best.

Any Thoughts?

150 clicks is nothing. Your perceptions are subjective and if you're not used to the V4, you will feel the bike is vibrating under throttle. It's not a in line and wont feel or sound like it while accelerating. You will notice that the more miles you stack on the bike, the better the torque curve and the smoother the machine will be. But as I said....you're a long ways away from that. The motor is still settling in and all the parts are just beginning to mesh. I'm sure all is fine since I experienced the same thing you describe.
Your under warranty so ride more and worry less. You'll find she just gets better and better and will notice a big change around the 2000 mile mark. Good Luck!

The growl's pretty normal, the vibration isn't.

He might be talking about the rattling noise during low RPM (below 2500 or so ) / relatively high load. Most people have rectified this by carefully getting the balancing shafts back in line. Suspect it will get rid of the vibs too (well most of it) Staying below 3000 RPM during breakin is not going to do any good IMO. Like Rob is mentioning, you are getting very close to lugging the engine at that RPM if you put any significant load on the engine. High load / low rpm i.e lugging does certainly not put your crankshaft bearings under ideal working conditions.

Adjust the counterbalancers. It takes about 20 minutes. It couldn't hurt.

The adjustment will likely take care of the growl and smooth things out. Been there, done that.
