2000 ST 1100 ABS II
I have a rattling noise at around 2000 rpm +/- 50 rpm - if the conditions are right : Driving up a steep incline , starting from stop up a steep incline ,coming out of hair pin turns - yes uphill . It seems to be when there is moderat load / accelerating from slow speeds up hill. It's only there at around 2000 rpm . Never hear it in cruise / flat road / higher speeds /normal acceleration flat road. Seems like I hear it more, when I'm working in the friction zone with the clutch , but It's there when the clutch is fully released . I can produce the sound standing still on an incline , in 1st gear /2000 rpm- in the friction zone. Sometimes I sence I can feel it in the clutch lever , but I'm not sure. Seems be in the front area of the ST.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with the clutch. The clutch works with out any problems. Infact ,the whole bike runs great. The heat sheilds don't have any rust /and look very nice so I dont think thats where it's coming from . I have not had the carbs synchronized , and the sound can be somewhat like engine pinging/knock , but only at 2000 rpm ?
I've heard the rattling for some time now , don't think it's changed much , but I'd like to get it taken care of .
So - Does this sound familiar ?

Yea , got a stethoscope and/or ear plugs. It's not a big problem (yet), it's not there most of time ,.. And when it does occure it dosen't sound nasty .will see !

just look around bolts on the shield, upper on mine no rust just cracked.

Tap both Heat shields with a metal object , you should be able to tell if one or the other is a problem. BTDT
It could also be one of the bolts is broken.

It could also be a loose body panel, knock around with a knuckle and see if they are all tight.

Heat Shields are my best bet. Get it rattling, you'll need a helper.
Then with the access panels removed on both sides press on the heat Shields (they will be hot) with a piece of something non metallic, try it in different areas to see if it goes away/changes. Sometimes it is enough just to tweak the shield but if they're rusted out they'll need work.
Have fun.

He he , You guys are great ! Now - I think it's the Heat Shields ! Sun is shining today , but the days getting colder and shorter here , So I got to use them . I'll get the fairings off soon , and report back. Thanks !

Coming back to this one : The 2000 rpm Rattle ! I've pin pointed a little more. I now think the rattle/noise there at a wider rpm range, but not quite as audible out side of 2000 rpm. Pretty sure it has something to do with clutch . Let me start with the heat shields as they were mentioned . Couldn't find any cracks , but right hand side heat shield was rubbing against the tip over bracket (photo) . Bent it away from the tip over bar, and it seems to have overall quiet things down. But the rattle is still there.
I can feel a vibration in clutch lever , that coensides with the rattling . The rattling can be felt/heard in the clutch lever range : not squeezing on the lever ,til the clutch push rod starts to press/get a Load. As if it's the slave cylinder pushrod rattles. The lever vibration and noise/rattle can be felt/heard at stand still in neutral. It disappears ,when pulling in the lever.
I have not opened up the clutch - it works fine , but will do when the riding season is over. Changed fluids every 2 years- just done it .
Any thoughts ? Could it be the slave cylinder pushrod rattling I feel/hear?

Did you solved the problem? Ik think i have the same rattle sound and can not pinpoint it.
No ! I live with it . It's not there all the time and dosen't worry me. When I do hear it ,the bike is warm- as in been ridden for a while (hour). It comes under load , - acceleration out of a hairpin turn uphill (usually 2nd gear) , or even from a standstill start- uphill an incline- it there only at around 2000 rpm . I can provoke the vibration or, should I say ,the sound of a knock/ vibration/rattle , at near standing still, by standing still and feathering the clutch in the friction zone -again standing on an incline so there is some load on the system (engine ). The clutch performs flawless and there is no felt vibration in the ST ,though the clutch engages/disengages far out on the lever - Don't they all ?
So what have we got ? It can be there under load at around 2000 rpm when the clutch is fully engaged (lever out). Can be provoked at near stand still for a short moment. I never hear it in neutral. I can "feel" the clutch basket through clutch lever at idle and kind of alter the idle "rumble" engaging/ playing with the clutch lever (think this is normal).
I have plans to open the clutch one day and have a look. Bought the all the gaskets and stuff ,but the job has been put on hold . I think the problem is in the clutch basket some where.
It could be pre ignition /carb sync as some have pointed out. I run on 95 and 98 octane gas . It's not the same type of preignition sound that I have heard in cars. I find it strange that it only can be heard under certain conditions at 2000 +/ 50 rpm.
And maybe it could be something worse !
Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. Your explanation of the problem is exact the same as mine. It is not the carb sync, did that. Also not the two axels on the bottom that can be adjusted. Do not know the name in english. Did that also. I think also that the rattle is coming from the clutch basket or in the near.
It is a big job to open it and replace everything. Clutch works fine.
It is difficult for me to let it go. Everytime i hear the rattle i think that something is wrong.
