Clutch Line Pinhole Leak

2003 ST1300A with 128,000 miles on the clock. After a clutch failure last week I rebuilt the master cylinder only to discover that it was a pinhole leak in the clutch hose itself. The leak is located in the flexible part of the clutch hose in the vicinity of the steering head; it soaked the front of the bike in clutch fluid. Looking up the part, it appears that the clutch pipe is one continuous line from the master cylinder on the handlebar to the slave cylinder on the back of the engine. Has anyone replaced this part without removing the engine? I found the ST1300 - Clutch Slave Cylinder Replacement article by MaxPete, but I'm not sure about replacing the pipe itself. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, DP

Alternately, if I remove the lower fuel tank, can I access the back of the engine? This looks much preferable to dropping the entire engine.

I would like to help but I really don't know. From looking at my 1300 I would think the tank and breather off, with the lower fuel tank removed one should be able to twist it in and around without too much problem. Someone on here should know...Larry?

What about a repair to the clutch line itself: some kind of patch or heat shrink. I'm not sure how much pressure is built up in the hose, but could it be sealed with some sort of repair kit, heat shrink maybe?

David.
PM Max Pete, I think he's been in there, and no a patch won't work. And if it did would you trust it.
Hope it helps.

Sorry no go on a patch. The pressures built up in that little line are high. The only way is new to do it proper and have it last is replacement. Even a HP union would be a far stretch on a little tubing like that.

You can replace the rubber part with braided steel by double flaring the steel at both ends. I did this 14 years ago still holding up just fine.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't there a Honda recall (or campaign) to address the clutch hose problem at the steering head? Thought I read it here somewhere.

A local company can make me a new braided steel hose with a banjo fitting on one end and a compression fitting on the other. I'll cut the steel line, slip the fitting over it, and tighten. I think I'll try that before I buy a new pipe from Honda.
