I would like to make an online purchase of a cramp buster throttle assist for my '97, but she is at home and I am at work thanks to our lovely Oklahoma spring weather. I would like to buy it today so that when the weather improves in a couple of days, I have it to put on the bike.

Has anyone bought one for their 1100 that can tell me whether to buy the Standard (1 5/16" and smaller) or Oversize (1 3/8" and larger) size?

I have absolutely no idea what size the bars are, but I do know they are Heli Bars.

Standard bars on ST1100s are 7/8 inch. Hope this helps! The standard one should be fine as the larger ones will be for 1" bars.

Has nothing to do with the handelbar dia. If you have the oem dia. GRIPS use the smaller size. I have foam grip covers over the stock grips, so I use the larger size cramp buster.

Thanks, folks! I have custom Pro Grips' "862 Custom Grip", which according to their product listing max out at a size of 28 mm, which in Colonial terms is 1.10"

Now I know what to order :)

I used to have a ST1100 and used a Cramp Buster. As @ctx otto says: if you have only the OEM grips get the smaller one, if you added foam grip puppies or replaced your grips with larger than stock grips get the larger one.

I had grip puppies (foam grip covers) on my ST but don't have those on my CTX nor on my Burgman. Same stock grip size on all of these bikes. I used the larger CB on my ST, but the smaller CB on my CTX and Burgman.

Oh, and Cramp Busters should come with a wide rubber band to put on grips to help prevent slipping... use it.

I use the smaller Cramp Buster over Grab On foam grip covers. Works well. No band included and none needed. If I had the Deluxe Grab On grips or Kuryakyn ISO style (I think) I'd use the larger CB.

The smaller CB fits well but takes a little effort getting it on. I was concerned there might be some slippage with the larger CB. No band for either size when I bought mine years back. Maybe that's why a band is included now.

Thanks, everyone! Great, fast, useful replies, as is typical on this forum.

This is superior to the cramp buster:
IMNSHO

I’ve ridden with one on the throttle side for many, many years. Added one to the left side later. Ergonomic shape, and can be adjusted while underway (the original, non-velcro). Highly recommended.

I agree. I've used the CB and it presses right on the carpal tunnel, causing some numbness in the hand. I have Oxford grips and put some foam strips over those, I cut back the foam to apply the Throttlerocker.

Personally I don't like that kind of throttle control. A friend had one of those and accidentally applied throttle while trying to make a tight turn on gravel. The result was not pretty.

You should look at the Go Cruise option. I have one on my ST and it works great! The link is to the CDN site, but change it to .com for the US site.

totally different animal. Cramp buster is a throttle assist. Your link is a "cruise control" device. I use a CB when riding the twisties as my wrist have the old man issues and the CB helps.

Yes you may get a bump at times but learn to use the tool and all is well. Maybe position the CB lower on the grip.

This is because he had it positioned for use on the grip. He should not have had it in that position in that situation. He should have rotated it to be positioned out of the way. I noticed the same effect of unintentional throttle input after I first used a Throttle Rocker. I quickly saw this as a misuse of the product on my part and not a design flaw. I don't know about the Cramp Buster as I have never used one but, as John stated above, with the Throttle Rocker type design it can be easily and infinitely adjusted anywhere on the grip while underway. I have one and I only use it when I know I am going to be doing long miles on major highways. When I get to a situation where I don't want it influencing my throttle control (gravel, parking lots, city traffic, twisties, etc.) and it is still on my throttle grip I simply push it forward. I rotate it around so that the palm rest is pointing downward on the lower side of the grip. In this position it does not interfere with my hand movement. It also can not cause unintentional throttle inputs in this position as the palm rest part of it is facing down and can not come in to contact with any part of my palm. When I want to use it again I simply rotate it around the grip back to where it is in a useful position again. All of this can be done quite easily and in a matter of seconds while in motion.

I have a Throttle Rocker throttle assist, Vista Cruise throttle lock (thumb flick), and AudioVox real cruise control on my ST. And I use all three on almost every ride. On a long haul multi-day trip these allow hundreds of extra miles of travel. And yes, I’ve done a few 1K days, even two 2K in <36 hrs.

Not to dog pile but... I'd say that your friend might have blamed the Cramp Buster for his own mistake. It's a leverage assistant which slightly reduces the force required to twist the throttle and allows you to hold the throttle's position with the heel of your hand while you flex and relax your fingers.

Mine is in the 'On' position all the time. I can't imagine how either use case could contribute let alone cause unwanted acceleration. You hand twists the throttle. The CB/TR rotates with your hand. And your hand should be on the grip and controlling throttle when executing a maneuver especially in gravel. But when in doubt it could be rotated out of the way. I've just never needed to.

Even blaming a throttle lock would be a little suspect. Properly adjusted most of them allow the throttle to be controlled even when it's engaged should an emergency arise. I have a Go Cruise and like it a lot.

As to an actual cruise control I've never had one on a bike. But if I got a deal on one and somebody expert in installing said 'Hey c'mon over. We'll get that sorted in a heartbeat' I'd be very tempted. My car's cruise control gets only occasional use but my foot doesn't tire like my hand.
