Has anyone made the switch?? Seriously considering going from my 2014 Ctx1300 deluxe to an ST1300...
I've had the pleasure of riding both and to say these bikes have the same engine is a joke. At first I just
chalked it to up to the riding experience of my friend why I was getting left in the dust from a dead stop.
Until we switched bikes and I was the one leaving my friend in the dust. Besides that the ST has way better
storage as he ends having to lock up my helmet in one of his saddle bags when we take rides cause it won't fit
in the CTX....I'll stop there not to beat the bike up to bad.. Any suggestions on this topic would be great...

Hello CTX chap, I voiced my opinion some months ago on another thread here about why did Honda think it was a good idea to lose 30 ish BHP. Basically I had my head ripped off and was told that it was all about torque and I was stupid. Well I understand a little about torque and I wouldn't argue that I'm borderline daft but I wasn't sure it made a lot of sense. Of course there may be very good reasons why this engines characteristics are different besides an engineers whim. After all if the intakes and exhaust are different then the reasons could be simple.
But your comments interest me, I'm a little surprised that there is a big difference in the initial get up and go, with more low down torque in the CTX I would have expected the opposite. Also someone said the luggage was that same size, if so, it's obviously an odd shape, it looks less fat ( I wish ).
I have thought about swapping from the ST11 to a CTX but haven't got round to trying one for size, they're still a little too expensive for my pockets just yet, good ones here are about £9k. Can't help thinking the value will fall fairly soon. They're not sought after.
Keep us posted,
Upt'North.

ST1300 engines on ebay are way much cheaper than CTX1300 engines, anyone though of swapping engines....of course the PGM Unit would have to be changed out too...wiring???

You could have a sleeper on your hands! :)

Anyone know the actual differences in the engines? I googled it but could only find that the compression ratio was lower on the CTX (10.0 to 1) vs. the ST (10.8 to 1). I would imagine the cam(s) profiles are different.

The riding position is very different as well. I don't know that I would put the CTX in the full cruiser camp with feet out front. But, your feet are definitely more in front of you compared to underneath you. Steering is a bit quicker on the ST as well. Jeff told me that his feels at 70 mph like the ST did at 80 mph, which is kind of where everything feels effortless and butter smooth.

Tons of it will be personal preference. Body size, etc, etc, etc. One will speak to you.

Anyone know the actual differences in the engines?

I looked at the part numbers a while back when I noticed the difference in the engine behaviour between the ST1300A6 and the ST1300A9 (the CTX came out sometime around this period). The camshaft, crankcase, crankshaft and pistons are all different on the CTX - as is the engine management module.

(Only the engine management unit changed on the ST1300 around 2008).

Heathy, have you ridden one?

What a CTX1300 ? No. I sat on one at Durham Bikewise a few years ago (2014). I thought I really ought to overcome my bigoted opinion about it - the fact that I didn't like the look of it, without really knowing why. I had to get off it. My bank balance would never cope with what it was doing to my opinion about it !

I recall reading somewhere that, besides the mentioned engine changes, the throttle bodies are also different, enabling faster throttle response on the ST than the CTX.
As to fitting a tall rider... there are a few rather tall riders on the CTX1300 over on CTX1300forum.com
They think they fit fine. They add a taller shield and one or maybe two use a Laminar Lip with it so they can still look over the shield.
I personally find the ergos much better for me than my old ST1100. Almost the same as my former Gold Wing. I can ride much farther on my CTX than any other bike I've owned.

BTW- my bank balance did recover but now I'm not likely to replace it any time soon with the new 2018 Gold Wing DCT (not Tour). My "finance manager" would totally squash my desire to retire if I even thought of doing that.

Well, I'm 6'4" - 33" inside leg. And it felt pretty good to me - but sitting on it in a car park isn't the same as riding it. My pillion is 4'11" and her comment was that she could see ahead much more easily. That's her in the photo at the back of the bike, reading the brochure - and also in my avatar photo on the 1300.

I think it's growing on me, but at 6'4", I was wondering if it would fit.

Just out of curiosity really. I got two pics. Taken from slightly different angles, but it gives an idea. I've scaled them so that the wheelbase on the photo is proportional to the actual wheelbase so the positions of the back of seat and the footpegs are relative. (CTX1300 WB is 1638mm, ST1300 is 1491mm). The photos are aligned on the rear of the saddle. The heights will not be in proportion as the angle of the photo is different, and note the ST1300 bars are turned to the left.

But it explains why it felt quite comfortable when sitting on it.

I've had ST's since 1994 and currently own a ST1300 and CTX1300. I think if you watch some of my video's posted around here recently of my travels with both ST11 & 13's I kept up just fine while riding at a pretty good clip. Yes they are different powerbands/shift points and a significantly different riding position. This is why I purchased the CTX as it is more comfortable FOR ME. But honestly I have no problem keeping up. Now there are other things that I love more about the ST than the CTX. Removable and larger saddlebags, better cornering clearance, better suspension to name a few. But at the end of the day ill give those things up because the CTX wins out on all day comfort for me. Without my knee and shoulder pain I'd keep the ST as my primary ride.

As I understand it, the change in the engine for the CTX was to make it "Euro 4" compliant.

Why on earth they decided to change the styling, I have no idea. Possibly, because those who have had a ST1300 would baulk at the lower BHP etc...

John,
Totally off topic, sorry, the French clean air zones in cities do they apply to motorcycles and if so from what year. Mine is a 98 1100 and obviously complies to no discernible regulations. I'm not planning to ride into any large cities but maybe the towns are affected too.
Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I understand Euro 4 for motorcycles began compliance with 2016 models. The 2014 CTX1300 was a one-year model in the USA. That doesn't seem to make sense for Honda to build a E4 compliant bike 2 or 3 years before necessary then only build it one year.

I'll address the other complaint that no one has mentioned: I'll never understand the need to put a helmet in luggage (unless perhaps it's raining but then I just leave it someplace under cover). For over 50 years I've left mine on the seat, handlebars, or on the ground beside my bike and no one has ever taken or even touched it. It's ALWAYS been an expensive full face and the last 10 years of so has had a Sena attached. Hell I have a garage full of old Shoei, Nolan, and even a Shuberth or two helmets I wish someone had taken.

I never need a rationalized REASON, or other peoples' advice to get a new ride if I want it! :)

Tom
