FI Light On...

I have a 2006 with 72k on it. Sunday I pulled out of my driveway and noticed the FI light was on. As I turned around to pull back in it stalled and wouldn't start. It was acting like a carb bike, I had to twist the throttle to get it to start and run. As soon as I let off the throttle it would die. This happened a few times until I got it back one (1 block). Pulled into the garage, ran into the house for a moment, and when I tried to start it it fired right up and the FI light was off. I've put about 100 miles (close to home) on it since then and it has not done it again. Any thoughts?

Search the forum for how to find what the codes are. when the FI comes on it will leave a code in the ECU.

My guess would be the 5way tee got plugged up and then cleared out. Which means it could get clogged up again.

Do a search on that too. lots of info on it!

Might be time to run the diagnostic procedure and see if the FI system has any recorded faults. Pages 5-7 and 5-8 in the service manual. Ideally this will cause the FI light to blink out the code of whatever component was misbehaving. Could be as simple as a dirty connector on a sensor, a vacuum leak on a connecting hose/joint, or something more significant.

If you follow Jeff's post above that will give you a code. Long blink is 10 and short blinks are 1. So for example 2 long blinks and 6 short blinks will give a code 26. Usually that code will stay in the system until said problem is corrected and/or it is reset.
Here is a list of the codes. Let us know what you end up with.

Thanks for all the info! Just did this and it blinked twice then a few seconds later blinked 9 times. All the same length of time. So I would assume that's code 2 and 9, correct?

That would be correct but there isn't a code 29. Anyone know something about that?

I would start by finding someone familiar with the bike and before I started chasing my tail with electrical stuff, I would remove the Air box assembly and replace the vacuum hoses and clean out the 5 way tee, and then finish up with a starter valve sync (throttle body sync-sic).
What the OP was describing...had to twist the throttle to keep it running... would strongly suggest a clogged tee.
And those who've done the procedure, know that you have to hold the throttle open for several seconds to set it before you can sync stuff.

Maybe a silly question, but did you start the engine immediately after you turned on the ignition? I did that once on my ST13 and it wasn't happy at all - had to use throttle to keep it alive and the FI was on. After turning off the bike and then always waiting a few seconds after ignition before starting the bike, I never saw that problem again. I basically wait for the high-pitch sound to stop before I push start.

I honestly don't remember. I usually always wait for the sounds to stop on any FI bike. But I have been riding my 82 Suzuki GS1100 a lot lately so it's possible I did do that.

The FI light has been coming on intermittently. If engine is turned off, light goes off, bike runs normally for an undetermined time, if FI light comes on again, repeat above.

Problem started with the GIpro (gear indicator) playing up, not working, working intermittently and finally, not work at all. Same time, speed started playing up, working intermittently and finally, now not work at all. I isolated GIpro (white four pin plug coonector under pillion seat), everthing worked okay for a short time, but now no speedo, no odometer, and FI light coming on intermittently.

I have diconnected all leads from the battery and will leave for a day or two, hopefully this will allow ECU and / or other items to reset themselves. Can't go through above suggestions to check codes until battery is reconnected, in the meantime, I'm reviewing other information I can find via the internet, but if the combined wisdom within OzSTOC and ST-Owners has any words of wisdom, they would be appreciated.

While waiting disconnected, charge the battery......

Yep, doing that!

....... Might be on it's deathbed.

Interesting you say that, but as I left the ignition (and headlight) switched on for an hour while breakfasting at the Bicheno Bakery, and flattening the battery "dead", I thought this would be problematic. But no, jumped started the bike and battery okay since. This was only last Thursday morning.

Got to the bottom of the problem with the help from other threads, some on this forum, and with some on OzSTOC. The offending part was the speed sensor.

Part ordered and now fitted, tested on centre stand, working okay.

General opinion was to remove RHS fairing, so whilst doing that removed LHS fairing, cowls and other sundries, and took opportunity to give the bike a good scrub, was tempted to put some of the small pieces in the dish washer, but had a better idea ...... put 'em in the shower. I sat and scrubbed 'em until the hot water started to run out.

If anyone else thinks this is an option for them, my tip is to do it whist wife / girlfriend / partner is out and not likely to come home - like happened to me.

The site of me sitting naked in the shower, surrounded by Honda bits is probably not a pretty sight, and something the better half didn't want to see, and her comment (something along the lines of) she didn't know that I loved the Honda THAT much.

:welcome1:

Now to get all the fairing bits and pieces back on, hopefully in the right order, but that is easier said than done. Bike is re-assembled, ready for a ride - almost. Except for part 16 (it looks important), but it's looking lonely sitting by itself on the garage floor.

Back down the garage tomorrow night. Just hope that I don't need to remove the main RHS fairing; may be just lower fairing.

Glad you had a good shower......

Do you want me to check the CCTV to seeif there is anything I can post?

Only had to remove the lower RHS fairing and tip-over bar buffer, removed a couple of nuts (12mm and 15mm from memory), all looks okay, now for a test ride - fully clothed of course.
