Firestick 3' NGP CB antenna

Dave Austin

As mentioned in a prior post, I added the Firestick No Ground Plane antenna to the ST with a 16" long x1" wide aluminum mount under the luggage rack. This improved range and reception 100% over the truck stop antenna. I have not measure the SWR yet, still not sure how to do this, but will learn. However, initial comm tests bike to bike are good. Wife and I went to a school parking lot and conducted range tests which allowed us to set squelch on both bikes and we also found that using a lower channel seems to work better. We used channel 20, which worked great, don't ask me why I am not a CB tech here and I could not begin to explain, it just does. By the way school parking lots work great for this procedure with no distractions on a Saturday morning.

The reception and transmission range was very clear bike to bike as stated we used channel 20 on my wifes cb on her ST1300 to my hondaline cb on my GL1800. After a systems check at the school parking lot we top off at the local gas station and left for a day trip down to Daytona Beach, Fla. We took coastal highway A1A and did the loop through the marsh and had a great time. The ocean was beautiful and their were lots of bikinis to be seen.... I mean the CB's worked great! <grin>

It sure is nice to be able to communicate bike to bike. Anyway, after a 320 mile ride wife on the ST and me on my Wing all went very well in the bike to bike comm dept.

I would highly reccomend the Firestick stainless steel 3' NGP antenna. I was told by firestick that the stainless steel gives better reception than the black plastic 3' model. Its very thin and much less visible as well. It also folds down or you may remove the antenna if you wish to cover the bike during overnight travel. I have the tourking cover, which allows me to cover the bike without folding the antenna. Also, for a mere $2.95 you can purchase a locking mechanism that adds a special locking nut on the antenna mount rather than using the large "come take me off "butter fly nut. <grin> This is a good "piece of mind" add on.

I highly reccomend the firestick 3' NGP antenna. It acutally looks like a factory add-on IMHO. Interestingly the antenna is made in Italy and is very good quaility.

The Firestik NGP antenna and tuned coax are tuned from the factory to give best performance (lowest SWR) at mid range or channel 19. You can maximize the performance on other channels, ie channel 1, by tuning the antenna using a SWR meter and adjusting the length of the Firestik antenna.;)

If I was going to use channel 1 and 19 the most would it make sense to tune it at a channel in the middle? I know nothing about tuning an antenna other than to hook it up to a SWR meter and set it.

If thw V.S.W.R. is going down as you go lower in frquency, the antenna
is just a bit too long (going from ch 40 to ch 1).
Curt, physically short (electricaly short) antennas "generally" have
a narrower bandwidth than a larger antenna. If you are not going
to use it above say, channel 20, you can tune the antenna for
channel 10 and it should cover 1 - 20 quite nicely...

Gmrs?

Do these antennas work w/ a Kenwood XL GMRS? I find myself bending the rubber duckie antenna on the back of the bike and Autocom..

No, they're not tuned for it. Antennas are designed to be resonant at a particular frequency, and as you get further away from that frequency, the more energy gets reflected back into the radio than radiated out in the air. (That's an oversimplification, because many antennas are resonant at lots of frequencies, some more useful than others...)

The best thing you can do for GMRS is to get the antenna out and away from you. If you can find a way to get an NMO mount attached to the bike, you have lots of options (and the ability to easily switch antennas or remove it entirely). My advice is to get a high-qiality antenna from a manufacturer that caters to the land mobile market. Larsen (http://www.radialllarsen.com) and Antenna Specialists (http://www.antenna.com) are two such manufacturers. Their antennas are not much more expensive than the no-name ones and will give you much better service. I've bought a bunch of Larsen's stuff over that last decade or so and it's been very good.

Sounds good and thanks! I'm a Ham Radio operator so I am familiar w/ the larsen brand and its been around a while....
BTW, what is an NMO?

It's an antenna mount that fits a 3/4" hole. Odds are good that if you see a vehicle with an antenna mounted directly to the roof or trunk, it's screwed onto an NMO mount.

Would wearing the kenwood in my belt w/ beltclip provided be a good solution??

Only thing I don't like about belt clips is that they have a tendancy to
come off if you move around while sitting... how about a breast pocket on
your riding gear??
