Hi gang,

I know this topic has been discussed at length here. I have a question regarding the Turbo City Tom CB mount. Can I run my ground wire to the bottom bolt of my antenna? I bought the J&M CB2003 with the J&M antenna. The antenna mount seems to be isolated from the mount with two plastic "rings". Or, do I need to find another location on the TC mount, such as one of the four bolts that the mount attaches with? Thanks.

The bolt on the bottom of your antenna is for the center of the coaxial cable feedline. The plastic shoulder washers indeed isolate the antenna from ground. Do not connect that to ground.

If you feel the need to ground your antenna bracket to the bike, use any other part of it other than the bolt on the bottom of the antenna.

I think that most of these type antennas are a "non ground plane" type. The only wire required is the center conductor wire, the antenna is NOT grounded.

Thanks Tom

Unless I'm totally mistaken there is no way to ground anything to the antenna mount. The antenna mount uses the back two holes on the grab rail assembly. The grab rail itself is non-metallic so no way to ground anything to it.

Thanks gang. I ended up grinding off the powder coat from one of the front bolt holes on the TC Tom mount and connecting a ground wire from that bolt to another grounding point on the bike. The instructions that came with the antenna said to do this. If I do have a NGP antenna (which I didn't think any of the J&M antennas were) what will it hurt if my mount is grounded?

Tom-I love this mount! Thanks very much for a great product and changing my shipping to get it to me sooner.

I gotta say that all your responses made me laugh. They were the typical Internet posts. One said it's not possible to do what you want to do, another said you don't need to do what you want to do, and the third said don't do what you were thinking of doing. Awesome!

.....and the final outcome was predictable as well.....

"The questioner goes and does it the exact opposite of what everyone recommended.....and still doesn't know why he needed to do it..." :D

I don't think my response fell into any of your three categories.

Isn't that what I suggested?

Yup. That's what I suggested.

That's not true. I was asking if I could/should ground the bottom bolt on the antenna lead or if I could ground one of the mounting bolts. And I know why I needed to do it. How did you ground your mount?

Ray,

Yours was the "don't do what you were thinking of doing" about connecting the ground to the antenna lead. You also said use any other part of the mount, which I appreciated.

I didn't, I have an NMO setup.
