Helmets Helmet conundrum?!

One issue I have found with getting a new helmet is the stores don't stock the different pad sizes. You have to guess what you need and then order them and they are not inexpensive. Even at bike shows, the helmet vendors seldom have different pads to try.
It can easily add $1-200 to the price of a helmet.

this is just a question wear of cosmetic appearance.
There is the general funk that can be found in some well-worn helmets. I wear a helmet liner to help mitigate any funk ingress and my helmets generally last longer than 10yre.

to avoid it, I usially wash internals of the helmet one a month in a washing machine. Unfortunatly, there are some not detachable parts of liner (like chin strap and windstopping screen around neck) , and they get dirty and degrade with time..

I actually just ordered a Neotec 2 Jaunt TC5 in Large. I had the same issue in trying to find one. Heck even trying to find one to order is tricky, forget trying to find one in stock somewhere.

This is to replace my X-Twelve that is also a Large and is getting pretty long in the tooth.

While I was planning on going with the Sena SRL2, I changed my mind just ordered a Sena 50S HK for it. Partly because of the Mesh and partly because I think I would miss the jog dial from my Sena 20S. I don't know how mounting will go as I will probably have to move it further back on the helmet.

I have had a modular helmet in the past and am mainly going back to it as my Lasik is fading and I am going back to needing glasses for correction. It is so much easier to deal with glasses and a modular helmet vs a FF.

I also always wear a helmet liner.

My European Schuberth C5 is slightly large. Will a helmet liner help? What helmet liner do you have?

Oh I have a few of them so I can wash them and some are more for cold weather.

I have various levels of Bohn Armor that I wear under my Aerostitch depending on weather and the ride. When I was ordering that up I ordered a helmet liner.

Others are something basic like this.

They are for the most part nothing special and not very thick.

I do have one, no Carhartt brand, but like this that I wear when it is cold.

I have no idea how many organizations are including the latching mechanism in their testing of modular helmets now because I haven't shopped for a helmet for a while.
The UK, under their SHARP helmet testing program, was one of the first, if not the first, to test and rate the ability of the latch mechanism to remain latched under impact. They started doing this because all of the other testing agencies such as DOT and Snell tested modular helmets the same way that they tested full-face helmets, and did not test the integrity of the latch mechanism specifically.
Their website is below.

I have a modular helmet. I find it very convenient at gas stops, stopping for a quick drink, or when trying to talk to other people, etc.. In any instance where you want to do something but do not want to remove your helmet, it is very convenient. I also find it easier to put on and remove than a properly fitting full-face. I also find it easier to put glasses on than when wearing a full-face.

I never ride with it flipped up, not even at very slow speeds. If during your normal riding you very rarely remove your helmet for any reason until when you normally would at a stop anyway, then the benefits will be less of a convenience to you.

I use a HJC I-90 w/ Cardo PackTalk installed. It's an amazing helmet.

There is also ECE ratings on helmets too. That's the EU version of DOT(?) basically, but it's "real world" testing vs SNELL's "racing" tests.

To even make SHARP testing the helmet must pass ECE testing.

Just to clear up what I said about the chin/cheek top foam deteriorating on my GTAir, Shoei UK stated they are not part of the 5 year warranty but they replaced them anyway free of charge. From my first enquiry to delivery was less than a week.
Thank you Shoei, good service.

I've had two pretty nasty crashes(both deer strikes). One in a Shoei Neotec and one in a Nolan N104. The Shoei had one of the hinges torn completely off but the helmet didn't open during the crash.
The Nolan was the helmet that I had on when I broke my neck and was paralyzed for a while. I think the Nolan is a better helmet and that is what I wear now. I cut the N104 in half after the crash so I could examine it. I found nothing unusual. The latch held thru the crash but was wonky and hard for the EMT's to open. The helmet was misshapen but still intact. I hope nobody gets to test helmets like I have. You might give the Nolan a serious look. I'm shopping for an Xlite X1005 ultra carbon as my next helmet as they are made by Nolan too.

I like it for summer riding... on my recent trip to NatSTOC I raised it quite often to sip from my camelbak. Plus, it's easy to get some air when stopping and refueling or grabbing a quick bite to eat.

Is a FF safer, yes I'm certain of it... but, I think a modular is safe enough. You just have to make up your own mind if that is an issue.

I'll probably wear my FF in the winter as the Modular flows more air and great for summer riding.
I'm a FF guy, they are more aerodynamic, lighter, and quieter. I own every iteration of the Shoei Air produced, and find them of the highest quality and function. All helmets protect, it's how they do it that you see the difference between a Shoei and a J.C. Whitney. All this stuff depends on what you like.

I'm thinking any incident that causes a Shoei modular to fail is going to be really bad for a guy whether the lid is modular or not. Just go with what you like.
