Help! broken key in Ignition

I totaly screwed myself this evening. I was fidiling with the key in the ignition when I discovered half the key was missing! Must have craked after gasing up earlier. How do I get the ignition cylinder out and how do I get the broken key out?

Thanks for you help in advance.
 
A lock smith should be able to help you get the key out, failing that may be carefully try super glueing the end of the key to the remains or the end of a wire coat hanger. Then carefully pull straight out. be careful to only use a tiny amount of glue, wouldnt want to glue the key in the barrel....:D:D
 
Same thing happened to me. I used a very fine wire, worked down along side the key. I put a small ~45 degree bend at the end first and was able to lift the broken bit out far enough to grab it with some small needle nose pliers. It took a lot of fiddling to get the bend and get the length of the bent part of the wire just right.
 
There is a thing called a ( forgive me on the spelling ) Crochet hook that you can find at a store that sells sewing supplies . It's a long slender tool about the size of a pair of tweezers with a little barb on the end . I've used it in the past to dig out broken keys .
 
Been there, done that. I picked up an inexpensive surgical clamp (needle-noise) and lifted it right out.

I dropped it off at the dealer today. Thank goodness I have a trailer. Will find out on Monday what can be done about it. Stay tuned...

Now that surgical clamp looks like a goodd idea, I will definitly look into getting one.
Certainly time to order some after market key blanks.

For what its worth, I was horrified by the fragility of the original keys, and bought myself some blanks from a key cutter. They dont have the electronic chip in them, but I use them all of the time. I use the original chipped key placed alongside to start the engine, and drop it into the glove box once started.

Its more of a hassle, but I'll never be stuck because the original has broken.

A bit of a nuisance if you stall at the lights though !!
 
After you get it fixed I would suggest that you get some extra keys made and carry at least one extra on the ST at all times. I almost broke my key trying to open the gas cap while out of town. I now carry an extra key and use an after market key which feels stronger then the original key. Hope it all works out for you.

So, I guess the question is (as the poster who mentioned the chipped key was from the UK): do the European Pans have chipped keys? U.S. models don't.

Curious.

Yes really. Brilliant until you need to replace them. Then its a PIA
You get 2 with the bike. If you need a new key you have to get new blanks (?17 each from Honda), and the bike and the key have to be programmed together. Discard your old ones - they wont work again. You can have 4 programmed at any one time. And to programme them, I believe requires the Honda service people delving into the electronics - so middle cowl has to come off. Im not sure about that, and I dont want to find out.

I have one slightly bent chipped key which is kept safe for emergencies.
I have the other which I never use in the locks.

My solution if the masters ever break - STandard key, chipped part of key and strong tape to hold them together.
 
Hmmmm... but I've got no blinkin' red light on the miSTress. Are we sure that all US ST1300's have a STeed chip (not to be confused with a buffalo chip)?

UK models (and probably the other European specs) have the Honda Ignition Security System (HISS) - it's an inbuilt transponder immobiliser system. It's been mandatory since 1999 for all new vehicles sold in the European Union to have an immobiliser system fitted.

The ignition key has a chip coded to the bike. The system cannot be bypassed by either hot-wiring the ignition or exchanging the ignition switch module.

I have the original two chipped keys and both are slightly bent. I might get them duplicated and just keep one original on the keyring to activate the HISS by proximity. Why did Honda make them so long and fragile? Oh I know why...
