HOA Advice

Yeah, over there you've that weird thing where they can drive folks off their land by just massively raising the annual property tax...
Happens over here also and almost happened to me.
Property taxes were becoming as expensive as a mortgage payment (hadn't had one of those since 1992;)).
The former mayor got them raised 34% in one year, knowing a reappraisal was going to happen the next year and raise them again!
But I was able to go 'greenbelt' (land assessed on economic value returned) which dropped the taxable 'value' to a survivable level.

I was president of an HOA for eight of the 35 years we lived in our house in Pennsylvania. We were in a college town and had lots of academics who, while perhaps brilliant in their field, knew nothing about maintaining their property. It was a constant battle to get them to perform the basic tasks that would keep up our homes' values. And, not to be controversial, most of them were not native-born Americans. The university would hire a diverse faculty, and we would pay the price. I now live in Florida where the governor is trying to eliminate property taxes. Quite a change, should it occur. Also, we have a very strict HOA here, but it's the price you pay for security and value (as Bamarider pointed out in his post).

And for those few who might wonder why I haven't been active here for a while, Florida is no place for motorcycles. At least in the Sarasota area where we settled. Flat, hot and crowded is no way to ride through life. Man, I miss my bike. Lots of good memories and great friends were made over the years while on the road.

I appreciate all the feedback. It's an eye-opener. We saw a house today that we'll make an offer on over the weekend. Hopefully, it'll be accepted.

No HOA, but the homes are all about the same quality. Three-car garage, and workbenches already built in. Oh, and it has bedrooms and a kitchen too. ;)

But as they say, the game ain't over till the fat lady sings. And we still need to get the offer to the seller and get it accepted.

I've been looking at moving to the mountains. I have been setting the HOA search to none.

I'm more concerned about the rules than the cost. One set of parents was enough for me.

I want a cabin-type place with several private, wooded acres, moving water, and no lawn to mow.

And of course, garage space. Anyone know of a place in the VA/WV/OH/MD mountain areas?
