Casey

Today I went and bought my first actual riding jacket! My wife and I used to ride about 10 years ago and I/we never gave it a thought to actually wear protective clothing  I guess going into our 4th decade of life it was time to do it.

When picking out clothing, I was thinking,
black; nope, not visable and too hot.
Neon yellow; great visability but don't want to look like a highlighter on wheels :D (no offense to those that wear it, your're probably smarter then me)

I selected the Olympia Airglide in silver/pewter, I figured light colored for the sun and good visibility. Was considering the black with red but then I thought again about visibility and heat.

What are your thoughts on jacket color?

Held makes a black "armoured" leather jacket with "TFL Cool System". I was impressed by the fit and feel although it is quite heavy. It has zippers in the breast, shoulder blades, arms and lower back for ventilation. It also comes with a removable liner for cold weather.

It's supposed to have some special process in the leather which reflects the suns rays, making it cool to wear. I just bought it over the winter, so I haven't yet tested it in the hot sun. Anxiously waiting...

I bought a yellow helmet for visibility, and I will again, but the yellow Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket I bought shows dirt very easily. This spring I got an Olympic AST jacket <based on reviews here>, but got the gray instead of the yellow.

Hey Casey ... :D :D

Thanks for the chuckle ....

I wear a tri-colour jacket, helmet, and gloves (white, black, and yellow). I'm sure I look like a punk kid, but no worries. I'm more concerned with being seen.

With that gear, all the 3-M tape and the PIAA's, I'm gonna have fun in the courtrooom when the coffee-eating, cell-phone-answering, donut-munching, radio-changing, map-reading moron tells the juge that he/she "didn't see" me.

My next riding suit will be an AeroStitch Road Crater in Hi-Viz yellow/green.

Go ahead; tell me that you didn't see me ...... :)

My helmet is white, I think its even more visible than yellow, I have a yellow and black fieldsheer jacket. My mesh stuff is black but I am looking at the Cortech GX Air in Yellow.

I once had a black helmet, I felt like my brains were going to run out of my ears after liquifying from the heat.

I'll never go black again!!!

It's good to see you are thinking about safety by purchasing a actual motorcycle jacket. Color is a personal choice. Many stay with gray or black. some coordinate with their bike. some want to be SEEN. If you are looking to be seen. Nothing will beat a HI-Vis color. NOTHING.. Black, Gray, Multicolor like gray-white or black-red. all blend in and act as camouflage. These colors are the same colors as the cars on the road.
HI-vis yellow-orange-green. will get you seen
Personally I chose a Aerostich roadcrafter in silver and black. and if I want to be seen in traffic I will add my HI-vis vest over my jacket. Yes HI-vis does work.

Yeah, I recall a friend once saying he'd never own a grey car or bike as that color just blends in with the pavement too well.

I agree that, in helmets, white seems to be the most eye-catching. And I'm sure the high-viz yellow does indeed work in jackets. Me, I've just added extra lighting to the front of the bikes. As soon as I added the Moto-Lites to the front forks of the ST I definitely saw a heightened "see you" reaction from car drivers.

Compared to added frontal lighting, clothing color takes a distant second place, IMHO (especially as most of my jacket is behind the often shiny/glimmering windshield).

I have the faSTeST RED cortech GX air with black leather... goes with my faSTesST RED ST!!!!! My helmet is red, white, black, yellow and silver graphic. Should be able to see me coming. AND silverstars on BRITE during the day...

My 2 cents, HI-Vis jacket color and white helmet for all the reasons posted above.

Ordered my Motoport Kevlar in Hi Viz green, and added extra reflective striping. Wife followed me one night and all she make out on me on the bike was this big yellow blob with tentacles! HOWEVER, when I hit the brakes lights she had to squint from the red glare from the 3rd brakelight.

My vote for hi-viz also.

Heck I'd wear a neon sign if I could  with all the distracted drivers out there, and our vulnerability... see me, but dont touch me ;)

Regards,

I find this hard to believe. Some magazines have done tests with various colors of helmets and found very little difference with the temps inside the helmet.

I have a white helmet and a black helmet. I've never noticed a difference as far as inside temps but the black one gets hotter on the outside.

Most if not all of my past riding jackets were BLACK. when I bought the ST last year I chose a BLACK jacket (Olympia Moto Sports Bushwacker). However, when I saw pictures of Tor in his Neon Yellow AST jacket I had to have one. It was getting winter time and the AST is better suited for cold and rain than the Bushwacker. After using it and seeing the difference it made in people noticing me I had to get a summer jacket in the same color. I tried to get the Bushwacker in Neon Yellow but Olympia said they would not be making it in that color so I bought the Airglide in Neon Yellow. I have noticed that they show the road grim a bit but figure between the 2 jackets I can wash one and still be wearing the other. :D

I can't even read the NEON YELLOW in your post, Byron.. and that's supposed to be visible? :?)
