i was driving south down the 405 freeway, it was a perfect summer afternoon and I am cruising through costa mesa and the bike started to cough. sputter, loss of power and died. I thought I ran out of gas. I pulled over to shoulder. it wouldn't start. towed it home. started diagnosing the problem. put a load test on the battery, checks out. but no voltage coming to battery. checked connections ETC. so i have been pricing alternators and cant believe what I'm seeing, no way i can afford this. does anyone know where i can get it cheaper? and does the alternator have the stator windings inside the alternator? can the stator be replaced without changing the alternator?

thanks in advance

Honda does make some alternator components available and it could be rebuilt in the right shop. A problem for old school automotive electric shops is the gear drive rather than a rubber belt/pulley drive that makes it difficult if not impossible to bench test the rebuild. That's what I ran into. The only guy I knew of that rebuilt and sold 1100 and 1300 alternators passed away about 6 months ago so it's not getting any easier.

I am currently in this situation but I chose to have someone fix my bike. I do not have the time to do it. The cost is very high and half of it is the cost of the alternator. Not sure why you cannot take yours out, use the shop manual to determine what components are bad and use the above link to purchase those.

There are 3 component the Alternator, the Rectifier, and the regulator. It's highly possible the regulator is bad and the good news is they are relatively cheap and I think can be replaced without removing the whole alternator.
Here is a picture of one from an ST1100 40 amp (very similiar) It shows the Regulator and Brushes removed.
That Regulator for an ST1100 is a Denso 126000-1160 I suspect it is compatible.IMG_7221.JPG
