Well, I want to mount my iPhone to a RAM ball with a BioLogic bike mount case (waterproof and still touch usable).

Anyone done this yet?

Power: USB, cigarette socket - ? Suggestions?

Thanks UNTMatt - order for the USB power cord is in. Now all I need is to complete the mounting . . . I'm sooooo close!

I ordered mine from here : http://order.waytekwire.com/productdetail2/M50/11008/USB%2012V%20POWER%20/%20CHARGER/
A little cheaper for your next order. Have x4 going into a project box mounted on the dash , 1 for each dash device and 1 to another project box powering x2 blue tooth dongles that are wired for connection to myself or the pillion independently to listen to either the ipod or xm radio together or separate. x2 going into the left pocket to charge the blue tooth commo , when stopping for BBQ and PIE.

They are in stock at weytek. I ordered x2 2 weeks ago and they arrived in three days, I made a 2nd order for 5 on Friday and they are in route.

Well, next time I'll maybe save $10. Every savings helps . . . fund the next farkle!

OK, I've got the mount figured out for the Biologic case . . . I think, thanks to "Skeeterbeater" on the GL1800Riders Forum. A RAM ball with a female threaded end can be substituted for the strap and strap tightening mechanism that comes with the Biologic mount. I just ordered the ball.

If it works out as expected, I'll post a "how to" thread with full details!

That case looks promising. I too access my iphone thru the Zumo (while the iphone is buried deep under layers or in the saddle bag), but the case could be handy.

Be interesting to see how you get it mounted up Shuey.

Well . . . I access my iPhone through the Zumo too and I just added the Garmin microphone to the mix so I can talk.

I want to mount it so I can use it to scroll a text file of bonus locations and info on the iPhone screen during rallies as well as having a backup GPS ready to go.

Another benefit might be quicker access to a phone number than the capability provided through the Zumo.

I'll post pics after parts arrive.

Price difference between the outlets was only a couple of bucks. The extra $10 was for the rubber boot that covers the USB plug (on the device that you're plugging into the outlet) maintaining water resistance while in operation (did not see that boot on the Waytek link). Both plugs are probably about the same quality but that boot (which was optional) will probably serve your purpose well in the rally. Just a thought.

Mine shipped yesterday and he refunded my shipping cost.

I looked at that boot, You still have to seal it as per the instructions. Don't see it doing much , just put some silicone sealant around the out edge of the USB plug , dielectric grease on the pins 1 & 4 and plug it in and leave it. If you really want a sealed connection , use 3/4 heat shrink.

OK all, here's what looks to be a good iPhone waterproof case with a solid RAM mount. It's the BioLogic iPhone case, and it doesn't take much effort.

First, check out the case in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJg_VzOBVN0
(Oh yeah, I've got a 3GS - video test coming up soon.)

Next, here's a place to order the BioLogic case with handlebar mount:
http://www.amazon.com/Biologic-Bike-Mount-for-Iphone/dp/B0030C38Z4

In addition to the BioLogic kit you'll need a female threaded RAM ball.
Ordered 3Mar11 from Connie at GPSzone.com (800) 354-6193
Ram 1 inch Ball with 5/16 inch - 24 threaded Female
Part#: RMRQB358 $7.00

Lastly, you'll need a short bolt to fit the RAM ball which I bought at ACE Hardware for 43 cents. Size? Well, it's metric, close in size to 5/16th but I didn't note it down :(

OK, let's get started.

Here's the BioLogic kit as it arrived:
Left to Right: Allen wrench to tighten the handle bar strap, phone case, handlebar mount with strap.

Let's work with just the mount/strap. This is as received.
attachment.php

• top left is a plastic adjusting screw that tightens the strap when it's inserted. We're going to remove it. Peel off the rubber gripper (shown at right). It's attached with two-sided tape, pull that off too. You'll now have access to the back side of the screw. I used a small screwdriver to nudge the 3 pins (you can see them on the right end of the screw) to free it from the mount. Pop it out.

• Now for the obvious. insert the RAM threaded end into the recess where the adjusting screw came out and bolt tight from the other side.
attachment.php

• You don't need the strap anymore, so I cut it off with some heavy scissors and whittled what little I didn't scissor off with a box cutter. You may want to scrap a little plastic off inside the mount where the bolt head seats as it's not quite flat.
attachment.php

• Next, snap the case to the mount and it's ready to go.
(I think I'll dab a bit of black paint on the bolt head for a finished look.)

The case is waterproof, allows for both the Apple USB power cord at the bottom and a audio out cable at the top, is touch sensitive for full screen and button use AND has a covered window for the 3GS camera lens! It's also really easy to get the phone in and out of the case OR just release it case and all when leaving the bike.

Thanks to "Skeeterbeater" on the GL1800riders Forum for how to do this.

Any questions?

I really like that case.

I like that... but I have one potential issue with the set up...(actually with any iphone set up on a motorcycle) and that is using it with gloves on.
is there something about this cases screen cover that allows use with gloves on.. if so.. I'm probably buying one soon.. .
Shuey, please check it out with gloves... I'd hate for you plans to use it on the rally to be messed up because every usage requires pulling over and taking off your gloves, and you not know that in advance

This looks like a slick solution, Shuey:

but darn, I really don't want to punch holes through my very expensive waterproof gloves.
John

Me neither. If it's raining, I plan on just having a weather radar screen displayed on the phone and wearing my unchanged waterproof gloves. But, during dry and warmer weather (I don't think heavy weight gloves will work well with this either) I think threading the glove tips should work fine. We'll see.

I checked out the glovetips.com site and got to the order page:
"GloveTips Kit
Each Kit contains: 3 GloveTips, 3 conductive fabric strips, 1 pull needle with safety cap, 1 needle threader"

Doesn't sound any better than just using the ordered conductive thread and a needle I already have at home. IMO.

Time will tell,
Shuey

Thread arrived as I was heading out of town. Sew thread - go riding . . . not that tough a choice.

It'll be a little while before I can stitch up a pair of gloves and check it out. I'll post as soon as I've tested.
