Nürburgring Bans Motorcycles From Public Sessions

I would wager that bikes have a more difficult time behind them than cars (not that it's impossible, just fewer mirrors and riding positions often don't yield good mirror views), so this makes a lot of sense. I also think the folks riding with cages out there are insane, lots to go wrong at that sort of track.
 
I ran a few laps of the 'ring in a race prepped Alfa on intermediate tires. There was a light rain falling so there were not too many bikes out but there were some. The biggest thing, from what I could see, is that the bikes could out accelerate a lot of cars coming out of a corner and would pass just in time to brake for the next corner where the car could out brake the bike. You really had to be on your toes. Lots of opportunity for things to go wrong.
Even with just cages, there is such a wide discrepancy of performance (and drivers) it is not just a cruise through the country by any means!!
It will be interesting to see how they allocate the "public" days.
 
Nürburging is considered a toll road, not a racetrack during public access events. I guess roads can be restricted for some vehicle types.
 
I wish they'd make a track like that in the US and be paid by the lap, instead of the over expensive track days managed by some 3rd party.
As for the car & bikes... maybe not a bad idea to have it at separate days.

This could be a great idea as long as there are still times for the public to ride the track instead of drive.

It's not a bad idea. We went around the Ring some 35 years ago two up on a fully laden BMW K100RS (camping gear included). When you set off you think 'this will be fun' and it is, for the first few corners, then it went on and on and on and on... in theory there was no passing on the right but maniacs in souped up Porches were coming from all sides..... and the carousel bend..... terrifying. It was an experience, but not one I'd repeat :rolleyes:

It has to be seen to be believed. Cars, bikes, vans, you name it. Some full of family with gear stowed on top. About the only thing I didn't see was something pulling a trailer, but I would not have been that surprised!!
I would say that the car/bike thing is not as big a deal as the WIDE discrepancy between cages. I was flat out in the Alfa between corners when a Viper went by me, under braking, like I was chained to a post, and simply disappeared in an instant! And the "ring taxis!!!!!! Well that is a whole other kettle of fish. M5 BMW's with 4-5 people in them. Attention was about equally divided between the track ahead and the mirrors. The fact that it works relatively well is more a testament to the quality of European drivers than anything else I think. Something like this, here at home, would result in chaos of epic proportions.

Hahaha. Arc de Triumph easy peasy. My daughter went to University in Paris, round it in many times on two, three and four wheels plus driving a tour coach :D You just ignore anything coming from your left and focus on where you want to exit! Easier to say after the first time :rolleyes:
