Picked up a Nolan N100E in pearl white to go along with the SYMAX and a Modus from Fulmer.

I wanted a quieter flip up and a face shield that would stay up with all the varying air pressure behind the ST windshield. Only a couple of hours on it so far so things may change.

The N100E fits well in the XL, amse size I wear in the HJC but the contact points are all different. Where the SyMax fits tightly at the cheeks and forehead, the Nolan fits across the crown and is relatively looser at the cheekpads. Biggest difference is one that has been noted on other boards, pressure on the tops of your ears. Little irritating at first but it is adapting quickly and I think this will go away.

The latches seem very well done and lock positively but even with the changes to the latches in the new 100E's the Symax xingle latch is the front is much easier to use. Since the one handed latch is on the left side, which is holding the clutch in for me (always in gear at a light) I have to reach over and release with my right hand on the left latch.

Faceplate locks into 3 different positions and STAYS there. Has the new Pinlock system and and an antifog insert which I have not tried yet.
visibility is good, at least as wide as the HJC but not as high.

It was close to 100 all day and any thing would be hot but the venting seemed good and there was a definite cooling around the crown area

The biggest change for me is the ratcheting strap rather than a D ring. Very easy to use with gloves on but feels wierd to have a weight in front of my larynx while riding.

Overall, I think a good buy. I will amend this as I get more experience with the Nolan

Cool.....

Let me give you few pointers.

I often lift the chinbar before I come to the stop and before I hold the clutch lever in....

The cheekpads are of different thiknes and available from Nolan importer - CIMA, in Chicago suburbs - 866-2HELMET or helmets@aol.com .....

The antifog, when properly installed works great, even in a snowstorm....

The pins are centrifical and suppose to be tightened when the insert is in. Not to much, as the lens will start to "bulge"....

CIMA also offers replacement shields and liners. You may also ask for the specially designed for the N- series helmets, helmet lock extensions. It's a piece of stainless steel that fits the microlock....

Cheers,

About the anti-fog, what do you mean when installed properly? I had it and got moisture underneath and ruined the visor and the anti-fog.

Overall the N100E is a good helmet. Better than the Symax is my opinion. I also have the X-1002 and I think its the better of all three.

First, you'd be surprised to find out that some people "forget" to remove the protective film from the insert, before installing it and complain that the clearity of the view is not there.... ;)

Second, as I mentionned, the pins are centrifical. When you look at them from the "inside" of the shield, you'll see slots for a flat screwdriver....
When you place the insert in, you might nottice a bit of a slack and the insert may have a bit of a movement. When turning the pins, you'll eliminate the slack. But when you turn to much, the insert will bulge out, creating gaps between it and the shield... The shield will fogg in these areas...

Cheers,

Nolan N-100E crash update

The Nolan has been retired. I wore it for about 12,000 miles and I really grew to like it much more than my other lids.

I was wearing it during my unscheduled off road adventure in Febuary where it protected my noggin from a blow by a tree branch, a ditch and then several hard thumps in the mud of southern Mississippi.

I ended up with a black eye and eyeball from the transmitted force at the right zygomatic arch. mild concussion and a short period of unconsciousness. No visible damage or marks to the impact point on the shell and it did it's job, I probably was still above 50 when my head and the tree branch made their acquantance, they tell me I broke the tree. I heard a click and then woke up on the ground a lot further away. CT scans after the crash showed no injury to the zygoma or orbit.

The left side cover over the hinge and visor pivot came off during the crash and the visor was hanging loose on one side but nothing got into the helment with me. the right side red flip release is almost totally torn off and all the vents got filled with mud. Area on the right side of my neck where the strap runs got abraded pretty good, might be the strap fabric or the tree bark.

The foam looks intact also but EPS only works one time. I pulled all the Autocom stuff out and am donating it to my Paramedic class for use during simulations and drills.

Good lid, great price and I feel it did a good job.

Interestingly, On Mark Lawrence's Cal Sci site, he has a long article against flipfronts after a friend of his had a horrible crash outside of Hammond wearing one. That rider supposedly had damage to both orbits which Mark feels where a result of too much transmitted energy at the point where the zygoma and the helment meet. http:/http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Green.html

I do not know if I agree and I am not willing to try the accident again with a full face  but it is worth knowing.

Good to hear the helmet worked and that you are o'kay !

If you liked the N100E, you'll love the N 102 !

New shape, new chinbar release mechanism (button in the middle), new liner, redesign venting, the VPS sunshield......

Very cool helmet !

I just had a chance to testride in one couple of weeks ago.
My N100E has had a bussy life too. Time for a new one....

I'm forwarding your testiment to the Nolan Importer. I'm sure they'll be glad to hear you are o'kay !....

Cheers,

P.S. I can't get to the site you linked too.

However, if that's the accident where the guy totalled a '03 ST and had temple injuries, suppose to be caused by the N100 , I can help but call it a bull....

The fact is, that the whole pivot mechanism (as you may know) is on the outside of the helmet shell, not inside ! There is no way that the shell could be penatrated by the plastic pivot plates.

Second, I compared the N100E to the Arai RX7RR and the claim that the N100 lacks the amount of the EPS lining is also not true. The EPS actually reaches lower on the temples than the RX7RR, and the RX7 is concidered to be on of the toughest , safest motorcycle helmets - worn by many proffesional road racers, MotoGP, AMA, Superbike etc....

I've seen quite few N100 helmets that protected and saved the riders, to belive in their quality.

BTW all helmets were still functional ! Not usable, but the mechanisms were still working !!!

Something that "works" for the EMT's.....

How hard is it to install speakers (Autocom) in the N102, if you know? I notice it doesn't have pockets for them :(

J&M wants $519 for a N102 with their comm equip installed

TIA for info ;)

Some Nolan helmets have pockets that are filled with a piece of foam that has been precut for removal. You can't see it until you remove the liner.

I have the new N102 & it does have a place to put speakers just pull the foam piece out. It's a great helmet but I don't know if I like the pull down shade it falls just below mt eyes.O well I didn't buy it fir the sun shade:biker:

Well I'm riding out to BMW of Houston to try on a N102 in a minute... They are the only dealership/shop I've found locally that have them in stock to try on :( Might even be talked into riding a Beemer since it's so nice outside

Well... the N102 is a very nice helmet, but hurts my forehead :o: Tried on a C2... very nice... very pricey there  Might look at that

My ST gathered a crowd :D I thought they were talking bad about it her while I was trying on helmets, they all wanted to know where I got my sticker... LOL!!! The Beemer sales guy actually likes the ST... says it's a great bike :) Got out of there with all funds accounted for

Does anyone know if these guys (CIMA, in Chicago suburbs - 866-2HELMET or helmets@aol.com .) have a website? I'd love to pick up a couple of these lock extensions. TIA

Good recovery

Chris,
Here's to a complete and rapid recovery for you. Glad the helmet worked as it should have.
I really do like to read these reviews/comments on helmets (aside from crashes) so I can plan my next helmet purchase.

nolan n102 sun visor?

I like the looks of the new N102 and in theory really like the idea of that sun visor. However, does anyone know whether or not that sun visor piece will stay up at highway speeds at night? Or do you have to remove it when you don't want it down?
