ODYSSEY? battery for ST1300?

Don B

Does anyone know if ODYSSEY? makes a battery specifically for the ST1300? The battery construction, warranty, etc. are impressive, but I haven't been able to find an application chart for it that includes the ST. Their own website only has an application chart for cars/light trucks, though they make several (many?) for powersport applications.

Unfortunately, they do not. You can get one to fit but you'll need to modify your battery box.

I've heard of law enforcement fitting them (and modifying the battery box), but given that you'd be replacing an OEM factory-sealed AGM technology battery with a non-OEM factory-sealed AGM technology battery, I'm not sure what the benefit would actually be. Could be better warrantee, or more Ah, but also more weight and requires mods. :shrug2:

Ciao,

Thanks for the replies, guys. You've confirmed my suspicions. I don't need a new battery at the moment, so if ODYSSEY? doesn't have a direct replacement available when I do need one I'll just stay with Yuasa or another name-brand battery. I don't particularly care to have to make modifications to the battery box to accommodate a specific battery. If the ODYSSEY? is really a significantly better battery, it's cost might also be prohibitive from a realistic standpoint.

Odyssey's claims are their own. I'm not convinced they're that much better. I'm also not convinced they can sit for 2 years on the shelf without some permanent loss of capacity. Normal battery life should be 5 years if you take care of it properly, and I can buy two regular AGM's for one of those. The ST's battery is abysmally small and marginal for the application, and more prone to degradation by heat. I think you should feel lucky they don't have one in that size.
My buddy's Odyssey went dead due to stator failure on his Virago, which also has only 280 watt output. Once dead, Odyssey's require charging with a good charger of higher output, or they won't be fully revived (per Odyssey). If anyone has one go dead on a bike, make sure you charge it properly, not just with the bike. A Battery Tender won't do it either.

Ray, you think the ST battery is marginal, how 'bout the _3_ amp hour battery in my Yamaha 350. It's the smallest wet cell 12V I've ever seen.

I wonder at what point ODYSSEY will decide to make a YTZ14S replacement? Honda seems to be using this battery in many of there applications. My Honda Generator even has a YTZ14s for it's electric starter. I found this list of applications and one would think the numbers are sufficient to produce a replacement.???

If you want an Odyssey battery for your ST, contact Huntington Beach Honda (hbhonda.com) they sell a modified battery box that will house an odyssey battery. I had one on a police bike and got almost 4 years out of the Odyssey battery compared to 18 months on factory battery. LOTS of abuse and it just kept working. I think I would have gotten more use out of it but my mechanic left it sit dead for 2 weeks and he said it would not recover.

My ST1300 is a 2010 which I bought in 2012. The battery could be almost 7 years old, but certainly almost 5. I've kept it on a battery tender its whole life and it shows no signs of aging.

However, I do have some long trips planned for the upcoming riding season and I'm wondering if I should just replace it as a preventative measure. I'd hate to be hundreds of miles from home and have a battery failure.

Being stranded on a motorcycle, far away from any kind of help, for any reason, is no fun. My luck with batteries over the years is that they will fail in the worst possible place, in the worst weather, and usually at night. It is best to be proactive and change batteries on your ST1300 every three years, check your connections, and use them for a month or so before embarking on any long trips to the backside of nowhere, to be sure that your new battery is good. I have had them fail, brand new, on bikes and autos. There is all kinds of discussion about this in this forum. What I am currently using on my ST, and have been for the last six months. So far I am impressed.

In the product description it says no maintenance for almost a year.....what kind of maintenance do they need? ff

The original Yuasa batteries that come with a new ST1300 are excellent batteries. However, if your original battery is 5-7 years old I would think that peace of mind would dictate that you buy a new battery before your trip.

Funny coincidence... I had my bike out a few days ago and it's been on the battery tender since. So far, the light (indicating full charge) has not turned green. I guess I really am due for a new battery.:(

I bought a new battery from batterysharks.com for $36.80 including shipping. The price is almost too good to be true, but I'm going to give it a try. I'll have plenty of short trips to gain some confidence in it before venturing far from home... we'll see.

Double-checking the service manual, it says to remove the LEFT side cover, but the battery is on the RIGHT. That's a curious typo. But the picture in the manual is correct.

I think there'a a page somewhere here that lists some Service Manuel typos and/or errata and corrections. Not owning one I've never looked into it.

Here is a link to my article on installing the Odyssey PC545 battery in my ST1300 ...

BTW, I'm on my second Odyssey battery which is now 46 months old and still going strong.

EDIT TO UPDATE: As of April, 2017 my 2nd Odyssey has been in the bike for 49 months and not showing any signs of fading (no clock/tripometer reset).

UPDATE: July, 2017 and still no signs of this battery fading after 52 months.

thank for the write-up hoowasat. I have an odyssey pc-680 in my 1500 wing bought the battery new I '08 and its still going strong. I had to charge it twice, once bcause the alternator died and once because I left the key in the accessory position

Thanks! I believe I shortened the life of my first Odyssey when I covered the vent hole on the Battery-Bug I was using which caused condensation to form inside. This second Odyssey has now been in service 50 months (no Battery-Bug in use).

I have had good luck with the new generation of desulphinating intelligent chargers on both the stock battery in my 05 ST and also with my Odyssey PC680 that I have in my airplane, 7 years and still passing annual inspection

Glad to report I now have a tad over 4-1/2 years on my Odyssey PC545 battery with no signs of fading. Someone mentioned somewhere that the Odyssey has too few CCA's for the ST1300. True that, but it hasn't failed to start my bike.

People like to say 'you get what you pay for'. Not always true. Sometimes you don't. But in your case you got more. Congratulations!

Out of curiosity does it have fewer CCAs than the OEM ST 1300 battery? I think one of the best things you can do for any battery in your bike is to switch to LED headlights and follow up with LED everything else lights. And a tender is good too.
