Hey all, I'm having issues with using the tiny jacks phones use to charge. In the past couple months I've gone through 2 cords because the tiny USB connector on the cord wears out. The connector is so small it just has no strength. I use my phone in a Ram mount when its not raining, and even though I have the cord run through one of the "fingers" of the mount to provide support for the cable, it still only lasts a few weeks before loosening up and causing a poor connection.

I also don't dare to use the charging cord when the phone is in a bag because of how delicate the plug is. So far its been the cords wearing out, but I worry I'll break the plug in my HTC Touch phone.

What do you all do for a reliable connection for phones? And how do you charge them when in a bag without breaking a plug?

I don't.

I charge at night or I use a battery pack to charge the phone roadside that I charge at night when charging the phone.

I use other items for music and have a dedicated GPS and any calls are short and few.

My phone goes in a generic RAM mount and I've never 'worn' out the cord that's on my bike (3 years of riding - approx. 15k)... Where have you been getting your charging cords? Maybe that's the problem... Get the ones Made in Japan instead of the ones Made in China... Maybe that'll make a difference... YMMV

Gosh, I charge my Droid X in the bag all the time without problem. Why would it be hard to charge it in the bag?

I concur on the Japanese cords.....They fit tighter in the slot and lock in deeper. Try buying the cord from the Providers store or brand name match the charger ( I bought mine at the AT+T store...) (It'll cost 3 times what the cheaper ones do but seems to be worth the money when using it on the bike)

I would also suggest turning the phone off while riding BUT I just put google maps on my Blackberry and can see 1 use for the phone while riding!

I charge my phone all the time when I am on the bike. Never had an issue. I just make sure the cord is supported and not pulling on the phone. I use a cig lighter plug cord.
I always use name brand cord.
