Possibly getting an ‘06 w/67k miles. Fuel filter?

So I’m currently looking at a 2006 with 67,000 miles on it. A guy is looking to trade it to me for a boat I have. I’ve owned several Honda’s in the past but all 80s bikes. I’m totally unfamiliar with the st.

The bike looks pretty clean over all from the photos. He said the one issue it has it bogs every-once in a while and if you pull over shut off and restart it clears up. He said it’s a known issue with with a dirty fuel filter and it’s located in the bottom of the tank and he hasn’t taken the time to replace it.

Is that accurate?

Are there any things I should look for specifically when I go check out the bike?
 
Listening to the engine and going for a little drive is all you need to do to like this bike. There are a few things to be aware of , but are easily taken care of with some TLC.
Another thing to remember is that this site is a valuable source of information to repair/modify any part of your bike. There are many site members who will gladly offer information and direction on any issue you encounter.
The miles on the bike are low and once you see the bike and drive it, if there are no obvious problems, its a safe bet to purchase IMO......good luck

Dirty fuel filters are not a common ST issue. Fuel pumps occasionally but usually at 100,000 plus miles.

Maintenance records available? Brake services are very important on the ST1300. Check for rear brake dragging. On the center stand check the rear wheel for number of rotations with a good foot shove. Should get 1.75 turns or more.

Hello, and welcome to our forum community.

Like David (@dduelin ) said above, dirty fuel filters are not a common problem with STs. Be aware that changing the fuel filter on a ST 1300 is more than a 5 minute job, and when you change it, you need to replace a large gasket that costs about $20. The 'bogging down' problem might equally well be caused by a blocked vent tube for the fuel tank. That's an inexpensive though somewhat time-consuming problem to troubleshoot.

We have a number of sub-forums here for technical discussions, and a sub-forum entitled Articles that contains "the best of the best" how-to-do-it articles. Have a browse through those forums, there's some great info in there.

If the vendor does not have maintenance records, plan on needing to spend a few hundred dollars and about 8 hours of work to change brake and clutch fluids, and to overhaul and tune up the brake system. Instructions for doing those jobs can be found in the above-mentioned forums.

You didn't mention if the bike has ABS or not. If it doesn't have ABS, it's really not worth all that much - so your decision really depends on what you think your boat is worth, and how badly you want to get rid of your boat.
