Passport or V1. I don't know if the new PP 9500 is worth the additional price over the 8500.

I think the 8500 would give good 'protection' and you can plug right into it without an additional component.

I use a Passport 8500 X50 with a Marc Parnes LED alert, it works well. I considered connecting the audio to my Starcom but I don't ride with the audio all the time and I don't have any more connections available. The visual alert is enough, if you run into the same situation.

+1. This is a good combination. The LEDs are very visible.

I highly recommend audio over visual. The audio is unmistakable and isn't a distraction like the visual. Be sure to get a unit that talks to you so you know what band is being detected as trying to remember the different beeps is rediculous. There are several good units available. I know Cobra offers a talking unit. I went with a Whistler 2-piece unit. I have the antenna mounted behind the front fairing plastic and the display part in the fairing pocket. I never have to remove it or worry about it getting wet or stolen.

I love my V-1 and have the audio running through my Autocom unit. But, you do have to purchase a separate part to accomplish that. My personal experience with Escort versus V-1 is that the Escort/Passport was far more sensitive to false alarms in the city I live in. But, a lot of people run with the Escorts/Passports and love 'em.

I have my 8500 X50 wired directly to my StarCom1 Advance (use a GLI cable though) and that works very well. The radar output mutes the music so there's no way to miss it. The beeps made by the 8500 for the different radar bands are very distinctive from one another and very easy to learn.

Gene this is a great question,
It seems to have alot of "solutions" too. But none are 'definitive', actually that shows nothing really works for everyone.
Do you wear ear plugs? can you har your starcom ok? do you always use your starcom?
it become difficult if your existing audio (assuming you have one) isn't in use all the time. I tried in ear speakers but without music they didn't give me the noise reduction I wanted.
Helmet speakers would be great, if you had some you could hear over the ear plugs. then just put the radar detector through that.
the visual alerts do work. I've gotten used to the Marc parnes I have. At first I kept looking at it, it was distracting. But not after awhile. You realize you will see it because it's in your peripheral vision, all the time.

Good luck with it! kind of a pia on a bike,

The HARD led follows your line of sight and doesn't require helmet speakers. The 9500 has a gps feature that allows the detector to remember false signal locations... I'd buy it but I already got a 8500x50. Don't leave home without it.
