Removing rear tail light?

Hi all,

Is there any available instructions or procedure on how to remove the rear set of taillight/rear signal cover? A wire on the rear signal socket is loose and I keep losing my let signal. I guess the wire at the socket is losing the contact, so I want to re-crimp it.

Thanks for any information.

Re: Removing rear set

The rear fender assembly has 4 hex head bolts.
You'll see two looking towards the front of the bike from the back and two looking up from the ground.

If you are also loosing the front turn signal at the same time you may just need to spray some plastic safe contact cleaner into the turn signal switch.

This shows an exploded view LINK

Thanks for that, do I have to remove the side cover at the sidebags as well?

There's no need to remove the tail light lens. If you just want to get at the wiring of the turn signal bulb socket without taking out the tail light, then you don't even have to remove the rear fender to get at them like you would for the stop/tail lights. You just remove the seat. The sockets come out if you turn them anticlockwise - if they've not been out before they will be pretty stiff, and the rear subframe tends to get in the way. You can remove the flat connector from the bulb socket and work on the wiring in situ. In fact you can remove the connector from the socket without removing the socket at all, but it might put some strain on the wires.

As for the tail light assembly, my understanding is that you have to remove the side panels and the grab rail assembly before you can get at the tailpiece with the rear light cluster attached. But if anyone knows how to remove the tail light without disturbing all that other stuff, I'm interested!

yes, I just replaced a rear tail light.. you have to take the 4 bolts out to get the rear fender off and you can get to the sockets, but I broke off the tabs and had to turn the sockets with a pair of needlenose pliers... they were stuck a little, but turn them as shown and they will come out of the holes, not too bad once you do it.. you may could at least check your wires from that...

I could remove the signal bulb socket, however given the space by removing the socket itself there isn't much room to remove the pins for recrimp, thus either I remove the fairings or i'll pull out the wiring for the signals, which means the right rear signal as well and god knows what else is in the bundle, i think taillight as well.

you have to do that (take the sidebags off) to get to the bolts...

Thanks alot for the information. Am going to reserve a day for these lest I do something wrong.

So there is no way to take off the Red/Yellow lense assembly without taking off the upper (silver in my case) cowling? Seems like there is just a clip holding it on right now.

Not sure it there is a better way, but remove the seat, side covers, grab rail , bags and rear fender .

Then it is 4 screws and 2 body clips .

The 4 screws and 2 clips are accessible with the bags removed , but I think the grab rail must come off as the
light cover (lens) is attached to the rear cowling plastic and it kind of rotates or pivots backwards , for removal.

I found 4 screws, two on each side, 3 screws inside (so far) but n clips. Will be tearing off the rest of the plastic tonight. Will take pics too.

The 2 clips are near the bag mounts, facing upward .

Almost directly over the rear bolt that holds the bag bracket on .
