I've decided I don't care for my TM. I'm probably going to just put the vista cruise as I had one on my '03 and it was perfect for what I use a CC for.

Question: The throttle side - how the heck do you get the TM friction bar out? Do you use the same cylinder that came with it that removed the oem bar out?

I've pulled on it but I don't want to damage it so I can put it in the classifieds.

Joe,

Dennis (bmcdonau in San Antonio) removed mine from the wrecked '05. The internal part has O-rings that are probably dry....

I'm not sure how hard the "guts" were for Dennis to pull....he did it for me long distance.

It had been a long time since my install and I really didn't remember much about what I had done....but don't forget to pull the handle bar back and remove the rubber friction ring. I didn't mention that and I have to replace it...not a big deal...$2.40 from Throttlemeister...

My guess is that did not work...

There is a spring retainer on the TM that fits into a hole in the Honda bar locking it in. IF you can roll the grip far enough back you can push a small screwdriver or awl in the hole to release the retainer and remove the TM. You might just have to cut off the grip to do this and replace with a new grip. DAMHIKT!

Well, okay, I'll 'fess up. I installed mine on the wrong bars so I had to remove and replace. I couldn't budge it so I resorted to a sledge and a screwdriver on the inside flat to the bar end. I finally broke the tang on the retainer and got it out which then upon inspection I figured it out!

I like my TM. If yours is not working, make certain the end with the brass is on the THROTTLE unlike I did. It takes a bit of fiddling to get the spacing and tension set right, but it works for me.

Good luck and happy mechanics!

Thanks, I need to replace a clip on the oem bar that came off to install the TM. I have the instructions for the install and can kinda see the hole/pin/spring I think you're talking about. I'll wait to attemp removal until I can get a replacement retaining clip.

Could I get to the hole you're talking about by just taking the grip off? does the throttle sleeve have that hole in it?

Yes, I think if you can just remove the grip you can get to the hole. I'm not sure how you can get it off though because the end of the grip was removed to install the TM. IOW, it will be difficult, not impossible though, to use compressed air. You might be able to get the red nozzle of a WD40 can partway under the grip and try that, but it's tight.

I prefer brute force, but I don't recommend that as a proper technique!

edit: My install instructions are long gone so I am going by my feeble memory. I'm not certain about whether the hole goes through the throttle tube or not, but I think it does. Keep us informed.

I've taken them off via compressed air before.. amazing how easy that is after previously trying the brute force method myself.

Joe I had to use the puller, and like you, didn't care for the tm. Well the other throttle locks really are much easier to use, that's for sure.

If you look in the specs, there's a part that should be replaced because when the oem stuff is put back in there's a "catch" that will no longer have a spot to "lock in to". If I remember correctly it would involve removing the throttle cable to replace this piece. Almost makes ya think yer better off leaving the 125 dollar throttle lock in place and buying a better functioning 25 dollar one

good luck with it,

good luck with it,

Actually, it looks like just the retaining ring/clip needs to be replaced.

Looks like Matt has already done this:
https://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23130

Looking at the manual, there's a hole the retaining ring fits into and the ring is usually destroyed getting the inner weight out so that needs to be replaced. The manual doesn't mention anything difficult about re-installing the oem stuff.

Can you link us to the part in question. I my remove the TM also, I don't hardley ever use it.

In the attached pics you see the inner bar you took off of the throttle end to install your TM.

In the next pic you can see the end of the bar with the retaining clip attached.

In the last one you can see the clip with a part broken off, that happened when the bar was removed with the puller sleeve supplied with the TM.

I don't have a pic of the replacement oem clip but there should be a pin pointing outward that will lodge in the handlebar end and secure this inner bar.
