Got my Stebel horn installed yesterday (thanks to the article here!) So that gave me a chance to really look at the missing spring clip mount for the bottom post. I bought a new clip and then found that where it screws into there is a chunk missing. Hhhhmmm. So like I said, now that I have it opened up I see this screw/spring clip actually mounts tot he front cowl....and it's plastic.

Any idea's on how I can fix this? Someone said get a big washer? I'm thinking I might have to get some epoxy to secure "something" to the back side of the plastic and use a nut on that back for this clip.
So far I've been lucky, the top two are holding it. But I don't want to run on luck for long.

The spring clips bolt into a 5 mm flange nut on the inside of the fairing. You should be able to find a compatible nut at a hardware store if you don't want to wait to get the part from Honda.

Thanks guys but I have a bigger problem (that I should have taken a picture of when I had it semi-apart of the horn install) There is a chunk of cowling missing about the size of the tip of your thumb. This is literally nothing to screw/bolt into for this hole. Honda parts will do me no good unless I replace the cowling. Not happening. Not for a mirror clip spring. I need for fab help on this one.

I can see in the picture that you are missing the plastic that the clip bolts to. A washer is not a real good fit.
I wish I had a shot at it as I weld plastic for my bike repairs and could make it better than new. But would have to have the headlight cowl to do it.
The two will hold the mirror cover very well but I would like to replace it if it were mine.

I have a couple of extra headlight cowls in black that I could send you if you would return yours to me. The freight would be a factor but not too bad if we use my FedEx account and don't do any over night stuff.
Let me know if I can help.

I better check to see if I have a used one in the same shape as yours. I do know that I have a new one sitting on my shelf.

Why can't you live closer?!?!

Oh hey..... road trip!! :bk13:
For giggles... I'll PM you. Thanks!

Ah, I get it. Don't mind me; some days I'm denser than others. :)

You're saying that the surface where where the screw should go through is missing entirely. That's kind of bizarre. Was the upper cowl modified? Could you humor me, remove the middle cowl and snap a picture of what's behind it? I ask because I also notice you're missing the rear retainer screw, which should go into the other empty hole.

I have to admit, I didn't enjoy removing the cowls at all, and if this is the only way to do it (www.touringmotorcyclists.com/tech_tips/st_tech_tips/front_fairing_removal.html) I really don't want to do it again for a picture and then have to do it all again to fix it. I think the PO dumped it and when I asked him about it played stupid.... You know, to make a sale. ;) But yeah, that rear retainer screw is non-existant as well. Another "piece" of that front cowl that's missing. :/

I was just in your neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. Not real excited to make another 6,000 mile round trip, although I was a little early for your state to show it's beauty.
The local people were saying it was almost a month behind this year on things growing and blooming.
I got your PM and will get back to you on the freight.

Take a good look at the upper cowl and see if anything looks out of alignment. It is my experience that the upper cowl support gets bent very easy and several bikes (actually a lot) that I have worked on will have that support bent. I'm thinking of making a template so that I can make the cowl stays align perfectly after those get offs. I have a growing pile of bent and damaged cowl stays.
The best way to know is how well everything lines up when replacing the plastic after taking it off.
Honda has a way of having everything line up very well. They have a better fit than other bike manufacturers in my experience.
