Seat tilt

kdonn

I'm a new ST rider after 60K miles on a Concours. If you're interested in my comparison have a look at http://concours.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20735. One complaint I had about the ST was that the seat tilts slightly forward (relative to the Concours). One of the forum members, Terry Hammond, directed to me to this site and said, "You put the back of the seat 1 position lower than the front... SHAZZAM,,, works perfectly level then..." Well, I ran right out to the parking lot to try this and I have no idea how this might be accomplished. It looked possible to put the seat on a lower height and then slide it back a bit to get even more tilt, but I couldn't see any way to have the seat on the highest setting while putting the rear tabs into any other slot than the designed one. Any insights appreciated.

I had no issue putting my front in the highest position, then pushing the rear of the seat forward and down into the middle position it went the first time I tried. I have heard of some forum members that have to bent the tabs on the rear underside of the seat for this to work. I also have heard that some are removing the rubber spacers off of the tabs to get the rear even lower. After I did this I have no forward sliding at all and personnaly I find the stock seat (now) as comfortable as my Sargent on the old bike.

Sometimes for a change of pace I put the front of the seat up to the middle slot while keeping the back setting as low as possible. I think you'll find elbow grease is the answer, Kevin. Push it firmly and it should go.

kdonn... I'm with you... I've tried to accomplish this trick more than once and I cannot seem to get the seat to go into the lower slots...

I have the front in the middle position, and rear in the lower position...I did have to apply a little pressure to get the rear in the slot, but alas it went. Now I don't have any complaints with the stock seat.

I felt I had to go to seat adjusting school. Here's what I've found out.

You can adjust the front seat on the front side and rear side. The rear seat can be adjusted on the front of it only.

I don't have a picture of the rear of the front seat adjustmen, but it's 3 different step levels. After you adjust the front, you have to push the front seat forward to get to the lowest of the settings.

I'm not sure if this helps.

Success!

I was able tonight to get the seat on the highest front setting and on the middle rear setting. For those having difficulties, what finally worked for me was putting the bike on the center stand and standing behind it pushing both forward and down simultaneously on the rear edge of the seat. I was actually showing my wife the problem and just happened to try it that way by chance and POP! it settled right down on the tabs with actually not much force. Technique seems key. Good luck and thanks, guys!

I know a lot of people have done this 'trick' with the seat but I don't think it is supposed to be possible and that will be why some people struggle with it. Also, I think a lot will depend on the seat itself. Not that anyone would want to, because it's better shaped in the first place, but I can't imagine you could ever get a Sargent seat to fit in this way. They are already much tighter against the tank than the stock seat. Just in case anyone who bought a used ST was trying this trick with a Sargent. There again, I'm sure there'll be someone here who's managed it :D

Good to see you over here!!! As I said,,, this group will talk you through any problem and are all good guys,,, except,,, this idiot some call ACL that is... :rolleyes: This group is just EXACTLY,,, like the COG group,,, just they ride different bikes is all... :cool:

The first time,,, when your seat is still virgin,,, it is the hardest to push it into the "1 Lower than the Front" postion... After a few times,,, it works as easy as a call girl at a Naval Convention...

:::::rimshot:::::

And,,, it is correct about removing the Rubber bumpers from the Tabs which extend into the actual seat... For short legged riders,,, it will catch you a 1/2 - 1 inch lowering...

Regarding the rubber spacers... you can cut or "shave" the spacers to further customize or "tweek" the slope to fit your needs. Just be careful to make identical adjustments to both. Otherwise, you will be listing to one side or the other... kind of like on a sail boat.

Another thing you can do for the passenger is place the two lips on the front of the passenger seat over the loops on the bike.
