St1300 manuals
The small tapered end has to sit on the cartridge ledge.
If installed incorrectly, the spring will fall past it and do very bad things.
No revisions that I could find.
Just common sense knowing it can only be assembled correctly with the smaller tapered end down, and not up.

Several of the early service manuals 03, 05, show the correct instructions.
My 03-08 also show the correct instructions.
The funny thing is, the later manual from 08 and newer show the wrong version.
I guess the latest, greatest, most recent version does not always mean its the correct one :rofl1:

Only problem with the wording is Honda called the tapered end both the large end, tapering larger, and the small end, tapered down.

My HSM, dated '03-2011 shows it correctly, tapered end down.

Best guess is they alternated years, figuring to get it right some of the time is better than none of the time. :rofl1:
